Tough net loss for Pioneer, but Chargers wind up 10-0

The members of the Pioneer girls tennis team knew what they had to do last week if they wanted to claim the Santa Teresa Division championship in the Blossom Valley Athletic League. They had to win both their matches on the road at Piedmont Hills and Willow Glen.

The big one was at Piedmont Hills since Pioneer was tied with Pirates for the division lead with only one loss each. Unfortunately, Pioneer suffered a 5-2 defeat against Piedmont and finished the regular season in second place in the division with a 12-2 record.

The only two wins in the Piedmont Hills match were recorded by Misa Tanaka (6-0, 6-0) at No. 1 singles and Kameron Brown (6-0, 6-2) at No. 3 singles. Camille Brown lost 2-6, 4-6 at No. 2 and Lianna Wong lost 4-6, 4-6 at No. 4.

It was long afternoon for the doubles teams as Marieke Stulp and Giana Flores lost 4-6, 7-6, 1-6 at No. 1, Yoder and Megan Miller lost 2-6, 5-7 at No. 2, and Justine Kirkeide and Shira Strauss lost 2-6, 3-6 at No. 3.

The Mustangs didn't let the defeat earlier in the week keep them down, though, and they finished the season strong by knocking off Willow Glen 6-1.

Tanaka won her No. 1 singles match by default. She finished division play undefeated for the year. C. Brown won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, K. Brown won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3, and Wong won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4.

Stulp and Flores won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles while the No. 2 doubles team of Yoder and Miller won 6-1, 6-2. The No. 3 pair of Kirkeide and Strauss were edged 6-2, 4-6, 1-6.

Pioneer will not compete in the upcoming CCS team playoffs but the Mustangs will send individual players to the league tournament. The BVAL tourney for singles and doubles players will be held Nov. 45 to determine who goes to CCS. Tanaka and C. Brown will represent Pioneer in the singles competition. K. Brown and Wong will participate in the doubles portion of the tourney.

"It was a very good season and a better one than we expected," said coach Julie Szarlacki.

Leland's girls tennis team finished the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record in the Mt. Hamilton Division by defeating Oak Grove 6-1 and Prospect 7-0 last week. The Chargers are the division champions.

In the Oak Grove match, the only loss came at No. 3 singles where Roxy Pourmirzaie was defeated. She came back strong later in the week against Prospect and finished the regular season with a win.

No. 1 singles player Myra Davoudi finished the regular season undefeated by winning in both matches. Roshie Larijani at No. 2 singles and Connie Wang at No. 4 singles were also victorious in both matches.

The doubles teams made it a sweep for the week as all three teams defeated their Oak Grove and Prospect opponents. The teams were Melissa Joe and Alison Keiley at No. 1, Carla Abi-samra and Judy Yang at No. 2, and Janelle Flores and Rina Parmeshwar at No. 3.

Leland will now focus its attention on preparing for the upcoming BVAL playoffs which will determine who qualifies for CCS. Davoudi and Larijani will represent Leland in singles play and Joe and Keiley will be in doubles play. The playoffs are scheduled for Nov 45 at Mt. Pleasant High School.
