Scala sisters top league dream team

The Scala sisters provided a pretty impressive one-two punch for the Leland girls volleyball team this fall. So impressive, in fact, that they led the Chargers to the championship in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

And their efforts, as it turns out, did not go unnoticed.

The Scala sisters were honored with special places on the Mt. Hamilton Division all-league team, along with teammate Christy Gillick and Leland coach Trish Moore.

Briana Scala walked off with the league's top honor, the Most Valuable Player award. The senior middle hitter was the dominant force in Leland's run for the league title. The Chargers posted a 14-0 record in the division and finished the season 25-3.

Chaulet Scala joined her sister on the special honors list by winning the league's Freshman of the Year award. Gillick was picked the Junior of the Year and Moore was the Coach of the Year.

Tina Williams of Mt. Pleasant was selected the Senior of the Year in the division and Amber Kaufman of Branham was named the Sophomore of the Year. Kaufman led the Bruins to an 11-3 finish in the division, good for second place, and a 19-11 record overall.

Senior Aliana Walker and C. Scala were Leland players picked to the all-league first team. Rounding out the squad were Branham junior Ashley Madrigal, Willow Glen senior Kelsey Roseland, Oak Grove senior Ashley Wiggins, Mt. Pleasant junior Deanna Anderson and junior Thao Pham and senior Sandi Sayama of Piedmont Hills.

Leland was represented on the all-league second team by freshman Joyce Chang. She was joined on the list by senior Caitlin Steffeck and Kaufman of Branham, seniors Katie Melin and Judy Choi of Piedmont Hills, senior Wendy Dick of Santa Teresa, sophomore Amanda Geary of Oak Grove and soph Melony Garcia of Independence.

It was Westmont and Leigh battling for the title in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL this fall, so it came as little surprise to see the two schools dominate the special awards list on the all-league team.

The Warriors posted an 11-1 record to win the division title with Leigh second at 10-2, and it was Westmont junior Kathryn Obermeyer who walked off with the league's Most Valuable Player award. Peter Kim, who led the Warriors to a 23-11 season overall, was picked the Coach of the Year.

Overfelt's Lorelie Afuola was picked the Freshman of the Year, then Leigh swept the rest of the awards with Katie McMahon the Senior of the Year, Malia Pires the Junior of the Year and Lauryn Dowd the Sophomore of the Year.

Westmont's Estee Robinson, a senior, and Katrina Park, a junior, were named to the all-league first team in the division along with senior Alex Siamu of Silver Creek, sophomores Dowd and Melissa Vargas of Leigh, senior Kirsten Akeley of Prospect, junior Julie Nguyen of Andrew Hill and sophomore Fuatino Aiono of Overfelt.

Senior setter Megan Merrill of Westmont topped the second team. Joining her on the squad were senior Juana Calderon and junior Johannie Saro of Overfelt, junior Tina Mai of Andrew Hill, junior Kate Nolen of Leigh, senior Caroline Slagle and sophomore Lizzie Miller of Prospect and senior Stevie Odle of Del Mar.

In the West Valley Division of the BVAL, Evergreen Valley sophomore setter Cortney Taku of Evergreen Valley was named the Most Valuable player.

Gunderson setter Be'Anka Macey was named the Senior of the Year, then the rest of the special awards went to league champion Evergreen. Noia Siamu was picked the Junior of the Year, Stephanie Tran the Sophomore of the Year, Krista Frausto the Freshman of the Year and Erika Sick the Coach of the Year in a near clean sweep for Evergreen, league champs with an 11-1 record. Lincoln finished second at 10-2.

Junior Christine Pham of Pioneer was picked to an other all senior all-league first team that included teammate Jackie Ho of Pioneer, Kimberly Carrasco of San Jose, Cloe Dorvkias of Yerba Buena, Kellie Wojnowski and Rosanne Martins of Gunderson and Caitlin Anderson of Lincoln.

Senior Emily Carcione of Pioneer was tabbed to the all-league second team along with junior Mary Ann Santos of Yerba Buena, sophomore Anna Harp and senior Megan Smith of Gunderson, seniors Amy Evans and Amanda Mason of Lincoln, sophomores Stephanie Tran and April McGuire.
