Chargers leap from fourth to first in soccer league
By Bob Scudder
It was two big steps and one giant leap for the Leland boys soccer team last week in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The Chargers knocked off Oak Grove 2-0 and Andrew Hill 3-0 to jump from fourth place to first in the Mt. Hamilton circuit.

It all started with the win over the Eagles.

"We dominated the whole game, but Oak Grove played very hard," said Leland coach Dave Gold. "We played too much long ball in the first half but started to play our game in the second half."

It resulted in the Chargers putting together a couple of scores. The first came when Peter Rodriguez picked up a cleared cornerkick and sent it into the post area. Alan Stycznski was able to stop the ball dead, then boot it into the far corner of the goal.

Leland's second goal was a result of some quick thinking by Stycznski. He was fouled, then took the Eagles by surprise when he quickly took the penalty kick, sending the ball to Rodriguez who directed it to Steven Beltashour. He blasted the ball from 20 yards out into the top corner of the goal.

The Chargers maintained their momentum later in the week against Hill.

"We came out on fire and in total control against Andrew Hill," said Gold. The Chargers punched in three goals in the first half and coasted to the win.

Grant Robson got the Chargers on the board when he took a pass at midfield from Patrick Davoudi and blasted a 25-yard bullet into the bottom corner to put Leland up 1-0. Leland increased its lead to 2-0 when Richard Gharapetian received a good pass from Josh Dollahite at midfield and dribbled the ball past six Hill defenders to put the ball in the net. Martin Stacy closed out the scoring for the Chargers by nailing a penalty kick.

Leland had the game in hand, so Gold rested his starters most of the second half to give everyone on his bench a chance to get some game experience.

Leland is sitting on top of the division with a 3-0-2 mark, just ahead of Pioneer and Overfelt.

Pioneer (6-4-1, 3-1-1) was riding a three-game win streak in division play before hitting a bump in the road last week. It was a winless week for the Mustangs, who battled Overfelt to a 1-1 stalemate and then lost a closely-contested match to Mt. Pleasant 1-0.

Overfelt took a 1-0 halftime lead. The Mustangs broke the scoring ice when Jarod Bibb was able to blast in a shot after receiving a pass from David VonStockhausen, knotting the score at 1-1.

The tie and loss dropped the Mustangs into second place in the Mt. Hamilton Division.

Branham (9-4-3, 1-3-0) picked up its first win in the BVAL Santa Teresa Division season by scratching out a 1-0 victory over Gunderson. Daniel Scott took the ball and dribbled it through a couple of Gunderson defenders before popping the ball sideways to Brian Bonsall, who took the pass in full stride and fired it past the goalkeeper for the win.

"It was a very physical game and we played much better than we have been playing," said Branham coach Trenton Mol.
