Golfers unbeaten
John Panetta and Austin Lundquist blistered the links at the Cinnabar Hills Golf Course, firing 1-under par 35s, to lead the Branham boys golf team to a 198-235 win over Lincoln last week.
It was one of two wins for the Bruins over the Lions on the week in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. Branham, 4-0 in division play, had opened the week with a 209-234 win over Lincoln behind Panetta's 1-over par 37 at Eagle Ridge.
Pioneer is also off to a 4-0 start in the Mt. Hamilton Division, posting back-to-back league wins over Piedmont Hills last week.
Tom Garcia shot a 2-over 38 at The Villages in a 208-254 Pioneer win over the Pirates after shooting a 4-over 38 at Spring Valley in a 209-225 victory. The Mustangs are now 5-1 overall this year.
Leland improved to 3-0 in the Mt. Hamilton Division with a 190-229 win over Santa Teresa last week. Daniel Nelson shot even par with a 35 at the Santa Teresa Golf Course to lead the Chargers to the victory.
Phan leads Chargers
Leland opened boys volleyball play with a loss last week in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. But the Chargers took care of that in a hurry, winning back-to-back matches to improve to 3-1 in the division and to 6-3 for the year.
The Chargers lost 25-17, 25-18, 25-23 to Oak Grove, despite an eight-kill effort by Tommy Phan, but they came back to beat Gunderson and Pioneer to retain their winning record.
Phan and Chris Hong had six kills apiece for Leland in a 25-16, 25-11, 25-23 win over the Grizzlies, and Noah Hall pounded down 15 kills in a 25-18, 25-19, 22-25, 25-23 win over Pioneer. Steve Geer led the Mustangs with 16 kills.
Pioneer had opened the week with a hard-fought win over Westmont, going five games before taking the Warriors 17-25, 25-22, 25-20, 20-25, 15-10. Ricky Messmann was the kill leader for the Mustangs, driving an incredible 33 balls to the floor. Messmann, though, has suffered a broken leg and will miss the remainder of the Pioneer season.
The Mustangs are now 4-2 for the year and 2-1 in the division.
Branham, meanwhile, improved to 3-1 in the division and to 4-1 for the year with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-18 win over Willow Glen. Josh Garcia led the Bruins with nine kills.
Garcia had knocked down seven kills earlier in the week in a 25-20, 25-22, 14-25, 25-18 win over Harbor.
