Volleyball title tie

A tough loss for Leland at Willow Glen and three wins by Branham left the boys volleyball race in a first-place tie in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Sam Lee drilled a team-high eight kills, but the Chargers lost 25-18, 25-18, 25-15 in the final match of the league season. Leland ended up 13-3 in the division and is now 21-12 for the year.

Branham managed to pull out wins over Prospect 25-20, 25-22, 17-25, 25-17, Leigh 25-22, 25-22, 25-22 and Oak Grove 25-20, 25-13, 21-25, 26-24 in the final week of league play to pull to 13-3. The Bruins are 29-7 overall.

Both the Chargers and Bruins now enter the Central Coast Section playoffs. Branham opens at Bellarmine (23-4) and Leland is at Live Oak (23-3) for 7 p.m. matches on May 13.

The Branham-Bellarmine winner will face the Mountain View (15-14)­Mt. Madonna (31-2) winner and the Leland­Live Oak winner will take on the Los Gatos (32-2)­King's Academy (16-8) winner on May 15 at Santa Clara High School. Los Gatos is the No. 1 seed in the tournament and Mt. Madonna is No. 2.

Soccer clash

Sporting Clube de Portugal, Portugal's premiere football club, will make a rare area appearance to take on the San Jose Earthquakes in a world class soccer game on May 12, 7:30 p.m., at Spartan Stadium. Tickets can be purchased through TicketMaster.

Track meet

The San Jose City-Wide Youth Track Meet for boys and girls ages 9­14 will be held May 23, 8 a.m.­3 p.m., at Evergreen Valley High School. The meet will include running and field events. There is no entry fee.

Golf tourney

The first annual golf tournament to benefit the Santa Clara University men's soccer team will be held at the Cinnabar Hills Golf Club in San Jose on May 18, with a shotgun start set for 1:30 p.m.

The tournament will be followed by a dinner, awards ceremony, auction and raffle held inside the banquet room at the golf course. The $250 registration fee includes green fees and cart, range balls, lunch and dinner. The cost is $50 for dinner only.

Rod, car show

The third annual Street Rod and Classic Car show will be held May 22, 9 a.m.­3 p.m., at San Jose City College on Moorpark Avenue in San Jose. The event is free to the public. All proceeds from the show will benefit the Student Book Scholarship Fund.
