Pitching was how you spelled success in West Catholic Athletic League girls softball in the 2004 season, and the coaches verified it when the league's top awards were handed out.
Emily Radonich of Valley Christian and Justine Kunkel of Archbishop Mitty were named as the WCAL's co-Most Valuable Players. Kunkel (16-3) led Mitty to the WCAL championship and to the Central Coast Section Division II championship game. Radonich (23-11) was instrumental in Valley finishing second in the WCAL.
Pitcher of the Year honors went to Jamie Lettire of Presentation. She finished with a 22-6 record, leading the Panthers to a second-place tie in the WCAL.
Dan Descalso of St. Francis was honored as the Most Valuable Player in baseball in the WCAL. Eric Plunkett of Valley Christian received the MVP award in volleyball while leading the Warriors to a second-place finish in league and to the semi-finals of the CCS playoffs.
Joining Lettire, Kunkel and Radonich as first team all-league selections in WCAL softball were Angela Guajardo, Coley Woyak and Leanna Guillermo of Presentation; Chana'e Jones, Chirstina Satalino and Brittany Hendrickson of Valley Christian; Christina Arnold, Megan Yocke, Nicole White and Danielle Peterson of Mitty; Kristi Roybal and Easton Hendrickson of St. Francis; Laura Kulm of St. Ignatius; and Chloe Kloezman of Notre Dame.
Grabbing second team awards were Rosie Diodate and Ashley Callaway of Presentation, Hayley Abbott and Jessie Wyre of Valley Christian, Samantha Ricketts and Elle Busch of Mitty, Mollie Hoo and Kim Mooney of St. Francis, Laura Zimmerman and Liz Larkin of St. Ignatius, Stephanie Erwin and Marie Hamilton of Sacred Heart Prep, Shauna France of Notre Dame Belmont, and Leah Madden and Francesca Murphy of Sacred Heart Cathedral.
Honorable mention recognition went to Francisca Farinacci of Presentation, Nic Lim and Donna Battaglia of Valley Christian, Ali Murphy and Katie Fleury of Mitty, Katie Ferren and Vanessa Farnham of St. Ignatius, Danajane Vargas and Julie Schloss of St. Francis, Samantha Tucker of Sacred Heart Prep, and Deirdra Spillane and Rachel Nogare of Sacred Heart Cathedral.
Joining Descalso on the WCAL baseball all-league first team were Jeremy McChesney, John Irby and Daniel Flores of Valley Christian; Ryan Conan, Jason Codiroli and Trevor Moore of Mitty; Rex Petrill, Kyle Spraker, Ryan Lee and Jared Lansford of St. Francis; Chris Armanino and Chuck Lofgren of Serra; Mike Aicardi and Chris Petrini of Sacred Heart Cathedral; and Matt Lucchesi of Riordan.
Receiving second team slots were Robert Papenhouse, Eric Thames and Juan Gamboa of Bellarmine; Jason Haniger of Mitty; Patrick Popovits, Steve Harty and Greg Ranes of St. Ignatius; Nick Gorman, Tommy Ledda and Nick Price of Riordan; Len Edora of Sacred Heart Cathedral; and Matt Long and Brady Fuerst of St. Francis.
Honorable mention went to Nate Garcia, Brian Chase, David Abraham and Tommy Medica of Bellarmine; Steve Cook, John Joines and Kevin Becker of Mitty; Chris Coleman of St. Francis; Jon Finley and Doug Hansen of Serra; Jim McCarthy of Sacred Heart Cathedral; Mike Watkins and Kevin Bianchi of St. Ignatius; and Denny Clenndenny of Riordan.
Nailing down first team spots on the WCAL volleyball all-league team were Plunkett and Bryan Anders of Valley Christian; Dallas Oliver, Brandon Williams and Brendan Kerr of Bellarmine; Dave McCollum of Serra; and Brian Houlihan of St. Francis.
Nabbing second team honors were Mark Almassy, Tim Hoffart and Jarod Kellar of Bellarmine, Jeremy Georges of Valley Christian, Alistair Planbeck of Mitty and Dan Wilson of Serra.
