District 10 council candidates continue the donation dance
By Sandy Brundage
District 10 San Jose City Council contenders Nancy Pyle and Rich De La Rosa have filed their latest financial reports, tracking their donations and expenses from Feb. 15 through June 30.

De La Rosa, once all the numbers were added and subtracted, came out ahead of Pyle by $10,995, having stashed away $26,715.14 in the campaign chest after expenses. Pyle's ending balance was $15,720.78, a third of which is money she loaned her campaign.

Pyle's donors weigh heavily in the educator, Asian and political-figure columns. California Assemblyman John Dutra and Rep. Zoe Lofgren backed Pyle, as did San Jose City Council members Forrest Williams, Linda LeZotte and Judy Chirco.

De La Rosa's money comes mainly from business owners and developers, although two GOP political-action committees, the GOP-backed Lincoln Club of Northern California and real estate group CREPAC/BORPAC, gave $250 each.

De La Rosa said that for the runoff election, he decided to not accept donations from registered lobbyists and so refunded Jerry Strangis' $250.

Even though they're running against each other, Pyle and De La Rosa share at least one donor. Real estate developer CORE Development gave both candidates the maximum amount legally allowed—$250.

During the initial election, De La Rosa pulled 48.2 percent of the 13,135 total votes cast, with Pyle trailing with 35.7 percent. A third contender, Ron Siporen, was third with 10.4 percent, and City Hall gadfly William Garbett pulled 5.5 percent.

The runoff election will be held Nov. 2.
