Jackie George may not be unstoppable for the Leland girls basketball team this winter, but if not she's darn close to it.
George poured in 23 points in Leland's only game last week to lead the Chargers to a 53-42 win over Westmont that left the local club 6-0 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League and 11-7 for the year.
It's not that Westmont didn't try its best to stop the 6-foot-1 senior center.
"The post players did a good job of defending George inside," Westmont coach John Mackey said. But George was able to step out of the key and hit some outside shots, forcing the Westmont defense to make adjustments.
It didn't help much. George tossed in 10 buckets from the floor and added three points at the free-throw line to lead Leland to the win.
Kristen Yoshioka supported with 11 points, including two three-pointers. Yoshioka picked up five of her points at the line.
Mika Yanai had a three among her three field goals and added three charity throws to finish with 10 points for the Chargers. Amanda Do added five points, including a three, and Meggie Yoshioka and Kelly Ricco had two points apiece.
"We missed some free throws that hurt us," said Mackey after the loss. "I think we just lost a little confidence."
The Chargers went out to maintain their winning ways in a Tuesday game at Piedmont Hills (3-4) and they'll be back home to face Oak Grove (4-3) on Feb. 4. After hosting Del Mar (1-6) on Feb. 9, the Chargers will face a key test at Leigh on Feb. 11. All games begin at 7 p.m.
Pioneer, meanwhile, lost a pair of Mt. Hamilton Division games to slip to 0-7 in league play. The Mustangs were pounded 32-10 by Piedmont Hills and blasted 65-46 by Oak Grove.
Junior Renee Cummings tossed in six shots from the floor to finish with 12 points and sophomore Michele Rebozzi pitched in 11 points, but the Mustangs lost by 19 to the Eagles.
Steffi Mattern and Angelica Woods supported with five points apiece for Pioneer, Emily Mather had four, and Samantha Tsukiji, Courtney Mesa and Jessica Curry each hit three-pointers. Mattern also buried a three for the Mustangs.
It was even a more dismal night for the Mustangs earlier in the week when they could manage just 10 points in the loss to the Pirates..
Pioneer was at home against Del Mar on Feb. 2 in search of its first win and will head to Leigh on Feb. 4, 7 p.m.
Over in the BVAL's Santa Teresa Division, Branham remained in the middle of the pack with a split, beating Silver Creek 62-44 before losing to first-place Santa Teresa 48-32. The Bruins are 4-4 in division play and 9-7 for the year.
Junior Paulina Kotula had the hot hand for the Bruins in the win over the Raiders. The 6-foot post player poured in 12 shots from the field and added four free throws to finish with 28 points.
The Bruins didn't have as much luck against the Saints later in the week. Santa Teresa improved to 8-0 in the division with the 16-point win.
Branham was at Independence on Feb. 1 trying to get back on the winning track. The Bruins will visit Mt. Pleasant on Feb. 3 and Andrew Hill on Feb. 8. Both games are set for 7 p.m. tips.
