First place will be on the line when the Leland girls basketball teams head to Leigh on Friday night, and Jackie George and company appear ready for the challenge.
The Chargers won twice last week—beating Oak Grove 40-34 and Piedmont Hills 42-35—to push their record to 8-0 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, and Leigh is close behind at 7-1. The clubs will tip off at 7 p.m. on Feb. 11 at Leigh with the division lead up for grabs.
George was in double digits twice last week to lead Leland to a pair of wins. She pitched in 17 points in the win over the Pirates and came back with 14 in the victory over the Eagles.
Sophomore guard Kristen Yoshioka supported the senior center's effort with 15 points in the win over Piedmont. Yoshioka buried three shots from beyond the arc. Mika Yanai supported with seven points, five of them coming from the free-throw line, and Amanda Do added three.
It was Do joining George in twin figures against Oak Grove. The sophomore guard had a three-pointer among her three field goals and she added six points at the line.
Yanai chipped in with nine points and Meggie Yoshioka and Kelly Ricco added two apiece.
Leland, 13-7 for the year, was to face Del Mar on Wednesday and will head to Leigh on Friday. The Chargers close out the league season at home against Pioneer on Feb. 16 and at Westmont on Feb. 18. All games begin at 7 p.m.
Pioneer is now 1-8 in the division and 7-16 for the year after nailing its first league win last week, a 59-46 victory over Del Mar (1-8, 7-16).
Michele Rebozzi had the hot hand for the Mustangs in the win over the Dons. The sophomore poured in a season-high 31 points, hitting a three among her 12 field goals and adding six free throws.
Renee Cummings finished in double figures with 11 points for Pioneer. Samantha Tsukiji and Steffi Mattern added five points apiece, Angelica Woods had four, Emily Mather two and Mary Hart on.
The Mustangs lost 75-50 to Leigh (7-1, 19-3) two days later, despite a 16-point effort by Rebozzi. The soph had a pair of threes among her seven buckets.
Mattern added nine points on three long-range buckets, Woods scored seven and Mather and Cummings had six points apiece. Tsukiji chipped in with five points, including a three, and Hart had one.
Pioneer hosts Westmont on Feb. 11 before closing out the season at Leland on Feb. 16 and at home against Piedmont Hills on Feb. 18.
Branham, meanwhile, improved to 6-4 in the Santa Teresa Division and to 11-8 overall with wins over Independence (54-40) and Mt. Pleasant (32-30).
Paulina Kotula poured in 24 points in the win over the 76ers and 18 more in the victory over the Cardinals.
