Grizzlies fall to Bruins--four times
By Kevin Sparrer
The Branham wrestling team faces two big tests this week. First, the Bruins will try to put the finishing touches on a championship dual match season when they face Leigh, then they'll get a chance to see how they stack up against the rest of the teams in the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The Bruins, unbeaten in the dual match season, will host Leigh on Feb. 10, 6 p.m., before heading to Lincoln on Saturday for the BVAL finals.

"We match up pretty well," said Branham head coach Nelson Southward. "The whole year these kids have been doing everything I ask of them."

Branham is coming off of a lopsided 72-10 dual match win over Gunderson.

In the 14 weight classes, Branham lost only two matches--one by fall--and the Bruins won the rest on four pins and a eight forfeits.

Matt Valverde, one of Branham's three captains, was the first to score points for the Bruins. In the 130-pound weight class, Valverde made short work of his opponent. He ended the match in the first round with a takedown and a reversal before pinning the Gunderson wrestler with only 22.4 seconds left in the period, giving Branham six team points.

Daniel Scholl was the next to score for the Bruins. At 135s, Scholl, led only 5-4 after the first two-minute round. He scored two on a reversal and another three with a near fall, but could not close the deal. It wasn't until the second round that Scholl was able to get his win. He gained another two points on a reversal before putting the Grizzly on his shoulders 45 seconds into the second round for another six points for Branham.

After Scholl, Brian Anderson added another quick six for the Bruins with a forfeit win in the 140-pound weight class.

Parbjit Bhangdu won his match at 145s with a pin late in the third round. He actually trailed 2-1 with only an escape in the first round and then trailed again 6-2 at the end of the second, but he wasn't done. Bhangdu fought back and with a quick reversal was able to defeat his opponent by pin with 54.2 left on the clock in the third round.

Branham had a slew of wins by forfeit that night: Doug Shehan at 154, Jace Guibor at 162, Tom Swale at 173 and Kenny Shearer (another team captain) at 191.

After the four forfeits, Daniel Shehan faced off with his opponent at 217. Shehan trailed 2-0 after allowing only a takedown in the first round and only scored one point on and escape in the second round. Shehan was pinned with only 2.6 seconds left on the clock in the second round.

Victor Skidzenuo picked up a win by forfeit at 277, adding his six more to the Branham total.

Michael Durham dominated his opponent at 105s, leading 5-0 after the first round with a near fall and a takedown. He continued to score points, adding another seven in the second round with two takedowns and a near fall, before pinning the Grizzly with 0.3 seconds left in the second round.

Nate DeFrance at 114 and Willie Harper at 121 also won by way of forfeit to end the night in favor of the Bruins.

Ali Moradi lost in the 125-pound weight class to his Grizzly opponent. After the first round, the Gunderson wrestler led 2-0 and maintained his lead in the second round, outscoring Moradi 4-1. Trailing 6-1 entering the third round, Moradi needed a pin. He was able to score another three points, but ended up losing the match 12-4.

"We can't take anybody lightly," said Southward. "We'll still have to work hard."
