It was only the second round, but it was almost the upset of the Central Coast Section Division I boys soccer playoffs.
Leland (14-6-6) met No. 1 seed Watsonville (19-3-1) in a quarterfinal game last Saturday, and the No. 8 Chargers held a 1-0 lead with about 10 minutes left to play.
But at that point Watsonville tied it up and then was able to squeeze in the winning goal in the pouring rain with less than a minute left in the game for the 2-1 win.
"Our guys put up a great show--it was one of those games that, as a high school coach, you want to be part of," Leland coach Dave Gold said. "They put everything out there on the field. It just wasn't enough today."
The Chargers took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Grant Robson received a cross from Ryan Villalpando and knocked the ball in from 30 yards out to the far post. From that point it developed into a defensive struggle until the final minutes.
"They have so much depth and are tough to beat," Gold added. "I can't see anyone beating them."
It was a different story for the Chargers earlier in the week when they opened the CCS playoffs with a solid 1-0 first-round win over Gilroy.
It was another rain-soaked defensive battle and Leland was able to find the solution this time. With about five minutes left in the game, Leland was awarded a free kick. With the wind at his back, Peter Rodriguez sent a low live drive shot that slithered through the defense and the keeper into the net.
It was a great team defensive effort for the Chargers.
The loss completed the season for the Chargers, who finished in second place in the Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division.
