A Little Bit of Everything: Daniel Nguyen, owner of Daniel's Specialty Foods—who was forced to delay the opening of his store on Blossom Hill Road because of construction delays—is now open for business and willing to order whatever customers ask for.
New grocery store offering organic, natural food will make special orders

After a more than four-month delay, Daniel Nguyen hit the switch to turn on the "open" sign and open the doors to his new store last week.

Daniel's Specialty Foods, located on Blossom Hill Road at Kooser, was scheduled to open in October, but the lack of electricity in the unit delayed the installation of refrigeration, lighting and cash registers for more than four months. He was finally able to open for business on Feb. 27.

Daniel's occupies a large portion of the space formerly used by Wherehouse Music in the shopping center near the corner of Blossom Hill and Kooser roads. A tanning salon, which moved in months before Nguyen's store was slated to open, occupies the remaining section of the old Wherehouse unit.

When the tanning salon was being built, Nguyen said, apparently workers moved all the electrical components to that side of the unit, leaving no junction boxes in the larger section. It took four months to get the space wired and a meter installed in the 6,200-square-foot grocery and liquor store.

The sign out front includes the words "organic" and "natural," and there is a fair selection of grocery, produce and other products that are organic, but Daniel's carries many products that don't necessarily fit those labels.

Greeting customers at the door is the produce and baked goods area. Some, but not all, of the produce is grown organically, while the baked goods section includes such treats as Musso's palm leaves puff pastry cookies, Italian Crunch Almond cookies and three different styles of focaccia bread. Daniel's own label, baked by Roma Bakery, offers sliced and whole loaves of bread, cheddar cheese rolls and more.

A natural accompaniment for bread is butter, and Daniel's has more than the typical variety. There are seven different brands of butter, including Kerrygold Pure Irish butter, Plugra European and Straus Organic.

Organic chips, gourmet cookies and crackers line one center aisle, and on the side walls are coolers filled with products—cheeses, deli meats, bacon and yogurt and a selection of prepared frozen foods, juices and ice cream.

A couple of rows of wine include sections reserved for kosher and organic wines, but the majority of the stock includes recognizable labels of traditional wineries.

A large selection of high-end beers—many in 22-ounce bottles and not found in grocery stores like Safeway or Albertson's—is available in coolers.

The full array of liquor includes some specialties such as tequila in a cute-faced, worm-shaped bottle, or Penca Azul tequila with a blue cactus rising up from the base of the bottle.

Ngyuen said that his store will carry a little bit of everything that you would find at the larger chain stores but his product lines will be more specialized and he is open to carrying custom orders for customers.

Daniel's Specialty Foods is located at 1337 Blossom Hill Road. The store is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
