There are times in high school baseball when seven innings can feel like an eternity. The Westmont Warriors lived through that eternity when they lost 14-2 to Branham on March 9.

But the Warriors were able to get a little revenge just two days later when they pulled out a 7-4 victory over the Bruins as each club evened its record at 2-2 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

"We came out on Wednesday and hit the ball better," said Branham head coach Kirk Selfridge followed Friday's loss. "We got hits with runners in scoring position."

Senior T.J. DeStefano led the Bruins in their Wednesday win, going 3 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored.

Louie Sakoda, another senior, helped out with two hits in three at-bats, scoring a run and knocking one in on the day.

Senior Brandon Bittle was 2 for 4 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs. Senior Kenny Chadwick crushed the ball almost as well as Bittle, knocking two doubles in four at-bats, driving in four runs and scoring twice.

Eric Janssen was another senior smashing the ball for the Bruins. Janssen roped two hits, scored twice and drove in a run.

Junior Mike Swenson singled, scored a run and had two RBIs and junior Duce Ferrante tripled and scored a run for the Bruins. Preston Ward and Nolan Robinson each had a hit, a run scored and an RBI, and Ward was also hit by a pitch in the win.

Branham struggled later in the week in the 7-4 loss to the Warriors.

Branham's biggest inning came in the fifth, with the Bruins trailing 6-2. Robinson led off with a ground ball that got through the left side for a base hit and DeStefano knocked him in with a line drive double into right. But he was thrown out at third trying to stretch the double into a triple.

Janssen put the pressure back on the Warriors, ripping a double down the left-field line to put another runner into scoring position. Bittle advanced Janssen to third with a ground ball single through the left side and Chadwick drove Janssen home with a ground out to second base. The inning ended with Bittle stranded on third.

The Bruins also scored two runs in the top of the third when Robinson singled with one out. He stole second before DeStefano roped a base hit, putting runners at the corners. Janssen knocked in Robinson and advanced DeStefano with a ground out to second. DeStefano stole third and scored on an error by the Westmont catcher.

DeStefano was the powerhouse at the plate again for the Bruins with three hits in four at bats, including two doubles, an RBI and one the four runs scored.

Robinson blasted two hits in four at-bats and scored two of the four Branham runs, and Sakoda went 2 for 4.

Janssen doubled, knocked in a run and scored a run and Chadwick went 1 for 3 and drove in one. Bittle also had a hit on the day.

The Bruins were to face winless Willow Glen in two Mt. Hamilton Division games this week. The Rams are 0-4 in the division following two losses to Westmont (3-1 and 5-2) and two more to Oak Grove (3-0, 9-1).

Branham was to visit Willow Glen on March 16 and will host the Rams on March 18 at 3:30 p.m.

The Bruins, who split with Santa Teresa in the first week of the league season before splitting with Westmont last week, will then face Oak Grove in two games the following week. The Eagles are 3-1 in the league and will visit Branham on March 22 and host the Bruins on March 24.
