The coaches at Leland, Pioneer and Branham knew all along that they were special players. Now the entire Blossom Valley Athletic League and everyone else knows it, too.
Leland's Jackie George topped a list of 11 local athletes who were among the special honors winners when the BVAL announced its winter all-league teams.
George was named the Most Valuable Player for girls basketball in the Mt. Hamilton Division, and she was joined on the list of special award winners by Kristen Yoshioka, Ryan Villapando and Valerie Huffman of Leland; Mark Bundlie, Flavio Hurto, Lauren West, Stephanie Righetti and Bianca Springer of Pioneer; and Paulina Kotula and Craig Hertler of Branham.
George, Leland's talented senior center, was named the MVP after leading the Chargers to the championship in the BVAL Mt. Hamilton Division girls basketball race.
Teammate K. Yoshioka was picked the Sophomore of the Year in the division with junior Mika Yanai and sophomore Meggie Yoshioka earning all-league second team honors.
Pioneer was represented by sophomore Michelle Rebozzi on the first team.
Pioneer's Bundlie was tabbed the co-Senior of the Year with Shaun Morrow of Oak Grove on the Mt. Hamilton boys basketball all-league list. Senior Michael Kaufmann of Pioneer earned a place on the first team and senior Robbie Nelson was a second team choice.
Junior David Farsai of Leland was named to the first team on the all-BVAL Santa Teresa Division boys basketball team. Leland senior Danny Hamouie was picked to the second team.
In girls basketball, Branham's Kotula was named Junior of the Year in the Santa Teresa Division with sophomore Oly Larkin winning a place on the first team for the Bruins.
Leland's Villapando was the Senior of the Year and Pioneer's Hurto the Junior of the Year on the all-Mt. Hamilton Division boys soccer team.
Seniors Steve Beitashour and Roheet Sen of Leland and Josh Lichtenstein of Pioneer were named to the all-league first team with seniors Grant Robson and Damon Ronsville of Leland and junior Ryan Gall of Pioneer on the second team.
Leland midfielder Huffman was selected the Senior of the Year, but it was Pioneer dominating the special awards list in the Mt. Hamilton Division girls soccer race.
West was the Junior of the Year with Righetti being named the Sophomore of the Year and Springer the Freshman of the Year. Pioneer's Randy Worthington won the Coach of the Year award.
Seniors Amy Cusick and Kendra Worthington and junior Kalia De Marquez were Mustangs named to the all-league first team with senior Angelinque Roma, juniors Kristen Orlando and Jules Setnicker and freshman Samantha Vega on the second team.
Senior Ali Sturgeon and junior Stephanie Kato were Leland players on the first team and junior Katie Campbell and sophomore Morgan Wampler won second team spots.
Senior Amanda Drasny won a first team berth for Branham and senior Lauren Jenness was on the second team.
Branham's Hertler was the Sophomore of the Year and teammates Jason Ducote and Julio Sanchez, both seniors, won all-league first team spots on the all-West Valley Division boys soccer team.
Senior Josh Lawler and junior Jeff Johnson of Branham were picked to the second team.
