Leland pushes softball record to 12-0

As Vanessa Truan goes, so goes Leland's softball team--or so it seems this spring.

Truan fired her way to a 5-1 non-league win over Santa Cruz last weekend and kept both her record and Leland's perfect at 12-0. Truan kept Cardinal batters flailing, allowing only one hit and three walks while whiffing 10 on strikeouts in the complete game performance.

Santa Cruz broke the scoring ice to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but Leland answered with one of its own in the bottom half of the inning and added three more in the fourth to win going away. Elisa Vye came through with a clutch pinch-hit double in that fourth inning to drive in two of the three runs. Vye was 2 for 2 and scored twice.

In addition to her effort on the mound, Truan also was effective at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a double. Ashleigh Adams also was 2 for 3 with a double and picked up an RBI as well. Christina Saenz also drove in a run with a base hit. Sara Adams, Amy Hakkinen and Jessica Talaugon each rapped a single.

The Chargers swing back into Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division competition this week. They visited Leigh on April 6, host Westmont on April 8 and travel to Mt. Pleasant on April 13. All games are 3:30 p.m. start times.

Pioneer (8-4, 1-1) used the break in the schedule last week to make up a couple of washed out league games. The Mustangs split a pair of BVAL Mt. Hamilton Division contests, opening the week with a solid 5-3 win over Leigh and but losing 2-0 to Mt. Pleasant.

Alyssa Walker (8-4) continued her ever present status on the mound for the Mustangs, nailing down the win over Leigh. She gave up two runs in the first but settled down to blank the Longhorns until allowing one more run in the seventh.

Brittney Rivas led the offensive charge of the Mustangs and drove in two runs.

Mt. Pleasant took a 1-0 lead right out of the gate in the first inning and then added one more in the fifth. Pioneer could muster only two hits on the day, which was not enough offense to do any damage.

The Mustangs crank back up the division competition this week. They traveled to Oak Grove on April 6 and will host Branham at 3:30 p.m. on April 8. They will visit Santa Teresa on April 13 with a 3:30 p.m. start.

Branham's youth and inexperience continued to be a factor as the Bruins suffered their third BVAL Mt. Hamilton Division loss without a win. The Bruins dropped a 3-0 contest to Leigh last week.

Holly Griggs got tagged for the loss but picked up four strikeouts in the process. The Bruins were unable to produce much offense with only three hits on the day. Melissa Enko, Michelle Haughey and Kacey Foltz each had a single.

Although the wins have not come yet, first year coach Jennifer McGrath doesn't see all doom and gloom.

"I'm pleased with the way the girls are playing and we've had a huge improvement in our mental game since the beginning of the season," the coach said. "We also had a lot of transition in what position individuals will play and now we're getting established in those spots. We're playing well defensively and playing competitively, and that's been our goal all along."

The Bruins added a non-league win last week with a 3-2 squeaker over Santa Clara. Branham rallied for all three of its runs in the third inning on a two-run double by Audrea Lopez and an RBI single by Haughey. Letricia Soto also came through with a single in the offensive surge. Griggs went the distance on the mound to grab a win and struck out three along the way.

Branham (4-7) will try to nail down that first division win when league play resumes this week. The Bruins hosted Mt. Pleasant on April 6 and will visit Pioneer on April 8 and host Oak Grove on April 13. All games are at 3:30 p.m.
