If hitting is the engine that drives baseball, Leland senior Damon Ronnsvalle certainly has the key.
Ronnsvalle blasted four hits, including two doubles, and scored four in Leland's 14-4 win over Willow Glen on April 8.
It was a five-run Leland rally in the top of the sixth that really did in the Rams.
Ronnsvalle opened the sixth with a single up the middle and moved to second when junior Steve Henry walked. Senior Logan Foos loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch before Ronnsvalle and Henry scored on back-to-back wild pitches.
Senior Gabe Castaneda drew a walk to put two runners on base again and they moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. With one out, junior Shane Murry walked and senior Andrew Kim was hit by a pitch, forcing Foos in. Junior Jimmy Kogura reached on a fielder's choice that scored Castaneda and Kim scored on a wild pitch before Willow Glen got out of the inning.
Junior Danny Dyer proved to be a big part of Leland's win with two singles and two runs scored.
Junior Andy Micko also had two hits on the day and knocked in a run, and sophomore Lance Gemette had a hit, scored once and had two RBIs. Junior Matt Slaton singled in a run and Castaneda singled and scored twice.
"We had some solid offense and some solid defense," said Leland head coach Scot Gillis. "We had some timely hitting as well."
Leland scored nine runs against the Rams earlier in the week, but lost in a 16-9 slugfest against Willow Glen.
Gemette went 2 for 3 in the loss with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Slaton 2 for 4 with a long home run, two runs scored and two runs driven in.
Junior Kevin Battipede and sophomore Alex Todd each singled, scored a run scored and knocked in a run. Kim and Castaneda also singled.
But aside from strong hitting by the Chargers, who battled back from a 9-0 deficit to tie the game 9-9, it was errors that proved Leland's undoing. Eight errors committed by the Chargers were the back breakers in the game.
Leland made it two straight wins with a 4-2 victory over Santa Teresa on Monday. Though Leland only had five hits, the Chargers mustered enough offense to win.
Dyer doubled twice and scored two runs for Leland and Battipede doubled and scored. Steve Akerson doubled home a run and also scored, and Kim belted a double. Dyer also went the distance on the hill to toss a 7-hitter, pushing his mound record to 3-2 and outdueling Santa Teresa ace Rob Gilliam.
Leland is now even at 5-5 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League and 7-8 overall. The win on Monday helped the Chargers pull to within two games of division-leading Santa Teresa (7-3, 8-5), a game and a half behind Leigh (6-3, 9-5) and a game back of Westmont (5-3, 6-6).
Leland shares fourth place in the circuit with Branham (5-5, 9-6), and the two clubs will collide in two games this week. They were to meet on April 13, and they'll be back in action on April 15 at Branham, 3:30 p.m. Next week the Chargers face last-place Mt. Pleasant (0-8, 1-8-1) for two 3:30 p.m. games--April 20 at home and April 22 at Mt. Pleasant.
