Leland, Pioneer driving through league golf season undefeated
By Dick Sparrer
They appear to be headed on a collision course.

The Pioneer and Leland golf teams are cruising through the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League with unblemished records. And there's a reason that they're both undefeated--they haven't played each other yet.

Leland improved to 9-0 in the division with two easy wins over Willow Glen last week. Gary Beene fired a three-over par 38 at the Santa Teresa Golf Course to lead the Chargers to a 210-260 win over the Rams, and Mike O'Connor came back later in the week with a two-over 38 at the Almaden Country Club in a 206-285 win over Willow Glen.

Pioneer, meanwhile, kept pace with three wins--two over Leigh last week and another victory over Lincoln on Monday.

Alex Hunt's three-over 39 at Cinnabar Hills sparked the Mustangs to a 208-244 win over the Longhorns. Tom Garcia and Tony Vestimiglia each carded 39s on the par-36 course at The Villages in Pioneer's tight 213-219 win over Leigh.

The Mustangs ran their record to 9-0 in the division earlier in the week with a 199-212 win over Lincoln at San Jose Muni. Garcia shot even par with a 36 to lead Pioneer to the win.

Both teams have a busy slate facing them over the next few days. The Chargers, who were to face Santa Teresa on Tuesday, will face Santa Teresa on April 14 at Cinnabar Hills, 4 p.m., before meeting Piedmont Hills on April 18. The Mustangs, who were to take on Lincoln on Wednesday, will face Westmont on April 18 at San Jose Muni, 4 p.m. Pioneer will host Westmont on April 20, 3 p.m., at The Villages.

In other league action, Branham could win just one of three matches in recent play, slipping to 5-7 in the division.

Jay Myers shot a four-over part 32 at the Rancho Del Pueblo Golf Course to lead Branham to a 195-201 win over Willow Glen.

But Branham lost 222-238 to Lincoln at Coyote Creek and 203-211 to the Lions at Los Lagos, despite a three-over par effort by David Siggins.
