Jason Hilbert wasn't too concerned about whether or not his Leland volleyball team would defeat Gunderson last week--the only question was how long it would take.
It didn't take long.
The Chargers rolled through three quick games to whip the Grizzlies 25-8, 25-6, 25-11. The win certainly came as little surprise, since Leland leads the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, now with an 8-0 record, and the Grizzlies sit in the cellar at 0-8.
Junior Andrew Atmeh led Leland to the easy win with five kills.
The Chargers came back a few days later to nail a third-place finish in the Willow Glen Tournament. Leland, 13-5 for the year, posted a 3-2 record in the tourney, losing to Monterey in the semifinals.
Sam Lee, Tommy Phan and Scott Lucas were Leland players named to the all-tournament team.
Leland enters the final stretch of the division volleyball season with a solid lead over the rest of the pack. Leigh sits in second place at 7-2 with Oak Grove close behind at 6-2. Willow Glen remains in the hunt at 5-3 and Westmont is 6-4.
The Chargers were to face a tough Oak Grove squad on Tuesday will be back on their home court on April 21, 6 p.m., against Pioneer (1-7) and on April 22, 6 p.m., against Westmont.
Leland faces a key home match on April 28, 6:30 p.m., when the Chargers face rival Willow Glen in the annual Tiki Match. It was incorrectly reported in the April 14 Almaden Resident that Leland had won the Tiki Match in a clash with the Rams.
"The Tiki Match is upcoming on April 28 at Leland--it wasn't the match that was just played," explained Hilbert. "The Leland gym will look like a tropical oasis in San Jose."
