Monsees continues her assualt on Leland's swimming records
By Bob Scudder
Sophomore Courtney Monsees continued her phenomenal season and individual assault on the swimming record books at Leland last week as she led the lady Chargers to a 146-34 win over Branham.

In the process, Monsees set two more school records in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. She swam the 200 IM in 2:06.69 to erase a school mark that had been in place since 1985 and then bested a 1987 record in the 100 breast with a 1:07.96 effort.

This leaves the sophomore holding six of the eight individual swimming records at Leland. In addition, she also holds the fastest times in four events in the Central Coast Section. Monsees is at the top of the list in the 200 IM and the 50, 100 and 500 freestyle events.

Monsees had plenty of help from her teammates in the meet win over Branham as the Chargers finished first in each of the 12 events. That moved them to 5-0 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League and kept them in the driver's seat for the division championship.

Monsees, Casey Armstrong, Joyce Lee and Cassandra Scott teamed up to take the 200 medley relay in 2:02.61. Scott anchored the 200 freestyle relay with Tina Revels, Christine Nguyen and Rebecca Pele swimming to the win in 1:50.69. It was Scott, Armstrong, Revels and Monsees combining talents to nail down a first in the 400 free relay with a 3:57.98 mark.

Four different Chargers grabbed wins in the freestyle events. Christy Stibbe (50 free in 27.28), Revels (100 free in 58.42), Scott (200 free in 2:15.86) and Lucy Chen (500 free in 5:59.22) all claimed first place.

Stibbe also came back to glide to a first in the 100 backstroke in 1:09.10 while Lee took care of things in the 100 butterfly with a 1:08.09. Misha Caohuu made sure it was a clean sweep with 113.95 points in the diving competition to grab a first place finish there.

On the other side of the venue, the Leland boys were racking up a win as well, coming out on top of Branham 112-55. In addition to the win moving its record to 5-1 in division competition, Leland had all three of its relay teams qualify for the CCS championships.

Jon Pavlovich, Max Dobrushin, Reza Zabihi and Travis Delamore qualified in the 200 medley (1:51.29) while Delamore, Brian Luu, Dobrushin and Brian Kane made it in the 200 free relay (1:38.73). In the 400 free relay (3:37.42) it was Kane, Ray LaRochelle, Zabihi and Pavlovich.

Kane (200 free, 1:59.39) and LaRochelle (100 free, 54.26) each finished first. Curtis Lord nailed down the win in the distance race with a 5:35.60 time in the 500 free.

Zabihi touched the wall first in the 200 IM in 2:19.06 while Pavlovich (1:02.37 in the 100 back) and Luu (1:08.94 in the 100 breast) were best in their events.

Leland will wrap up its regular season by hosting a dual meet with Santa Teresa on April 29 with competition getting under way at 3 p.m.

Last week, the Pioneer (4-2) boys team ran up against a very good Leigh (6-0) team, and although it came out on the short side of a 123-63 score and won only one event (Doug York in the 500 free), the team did "very well," according to coach Gordy Smith.

"The score was deceiving because it was probably our best meet of the year," Smith said. "Even though we did not win, we swam very well and a lot of races were very close. A number of our swimmers ended up with their best times of the year."

Kevin Zondervan qualified for the CCS meet in the 50 free (23.05) and 100 free (51.10) with lifetime bests. The 200 free relay team of Zondervan, Cole Davis, David Atala and Anthony Morlino also qualified for CCS. It was Morlino's first time racing on the team.

Season bests were also achieved by Brandon Martin in the 100 fly and Morlino in the 100 breast while Davis reached a personal best in the 50 free. In addition, divers Chris Barcelona and Greg Peterson racked up personal bests.

The Pioneer girls improved their BVAL Mt. Hamilton Division season mark to 4-1-1 with a 117-64 victory over Leigh with a solid overall team performance.

"Our team depth helped a lot in getting the win," Smith said. "We got a number of second- and third-place finishes which helped our point total. It was an overall team effort for the win."

It was an outstanding day for the Pioneer divers as Pioneer finished one-two-three in the event with personal best scores being attained by each diver. Kate Waggoner finished first with 207 points while Jenni Ng grabbed second and Kaitlyn Devaul came in third.

Elyssa Samson led the pack to finish first in the 200 free (2:11.65) while Cara Simpson brought home a first in the 100 free (55.23). Angela Nguyen added her name to the winners' list with a 27.22 finish in the 50 free. Simpson also nailed down a win in the 100 back (1:02.80) and April Ham swam to the win in the 100 breast (1:14.43).

It was Simpson, Ham, Elizabeth Hartland and Nguyen teaming up to snag a win in the 200 medley relay (1:59.95). Pioneer also swam to a first in the 200 free relay with Nguyen, Ham, Whitney Feezor and Simpson combining efforts.

The Mustangs will close out BVAL action on April 29 when they travel to Mt. Pleasant for a dual meet that gets under way at 3 p.m.
