Chargers in second after big win over Rams
By Dick Sparrer
Scott Gillis is hoping that Friday the 13th will be a lucky day for his Leland baseball team.

The Chargers can't win the championship in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League this spring--that honor goes to Leigh. But they could get second place with a couple of wins in the final week of the regular season.

Leland entered the last week of the league campaign locked in a three-way tie for second place with Santa Teresa and Westmont. All three clubs were 12-7 in the division heading into action this week.

But Westmont and Santa Teresa were to face one another on Wednesday while Leland was visiting Branham (9-10). The Chargers will close out the regular season at home against last-place Mt. Pleasant (2-17) on May 13, 3:30 p.m. If Leland can win its last two games, it can finish in no worse than a tie for second place in the division.

The Chargers slipped out of second after a tough 2-1 loss to Westmont last Wednesday, but climbed right back into the logjam on Friday with a lopsided 18-8 victory over Willow Glen while Westmont was losing to Leigh.

Logan Foos blasted a grand slam and Danny Dyer ripped a solo home run to lead the Chargers to the one-sided win over Willow Glen to close out play last week.

Andy Micko was the thankful recipient of all that offensive firepower. The junior hurler struck out three in three-plus innings of 3-hit pitching to earn the mound win. John Foley and Matt Slaton also saw action on the hill for the Chargers.

Sophomore Lance Gemette led the 18-hit offensive assault for Leland with a perfect 4 for 4 day. He had a double to go with three singles and he knocked in two runs.

Micko helped his own cause with a double and two singles to drive in two runs and he scored three times. Kyle Jones, Slaton and Kevin Battipede had two hits each and Steve Akerson ripped a double. Damon Ronnsvalle and Alex Todd each singled in the win.

The Chargers were also successful on the base paths, swiping four bags in as many tries. Ronnsvalle, Jones, Nate Jones and Gabe Castaneda each had steals for Leland.

There wasn't much offense for the Chargers two days earlier in the 2-1 loss to Westmont.

Battipede knocked home Slaton with a first-inning run to give the Chargers the early lead, but the Warriors scored twice in the sixth inning to claim the win.

Battipede singled and doubled and Slaton singled for the only hits of the day for the Chargers. Dyer and Todd each walked twice and K. Jones stole a base.

Dyer was the hard-luck loser on the hill. He tossed a 7-hitter, striking out seven, walking just one and hitting a batter. Both of the runs he gave up were earned.

Leland is now 14-10 for the year.
