The high school track and field season came to an end for most Santa Clara Valley athletes last Friday night at the Central Coast Section finals held at Los Gatos High School--but not for Rolando Gomez of Pioneer.
Gomez won a CCS championship in the discus to qualify for the CIF State Track and Field Championships to be held June 3-4 at Sacramento City College's Hughes Stadium. The top three placers in each event at CCS qualified for state.
The Pioneer senior hurled the discus 174-7 to win the event by more than 17-feet at the section meet. Will Tsai of Homestead finished a very distant second at 157-6.
Willow Glen sophomore Marcos Corona will join Gomez on the trip to state this weekend. Corona matched his season best when he ran 4:19.92 to finish just over three seconds behind senior Evan Anderson of Menlo Atherton (4:16.76). Corona came back to finish seventh in the 3,200 meters in a personal best 9:38.62.
Leland sophomore Dana McKenzie made the trip to the CCS finals and finished eighth in the high jump at 5-2, but she failed to advance to the state meet.
Bellarmine had four placers at the section meet, but none qualified for state.
Junior Jalal Beauchman tied for fifth in the high jump at 6-0, junior Napolean Greene was sixth in the 300 hurdles in 39.76, senior Sean Harris was seventh in the pole vault at 14-0 and junior Andreas Drbal was eighth in the 110 hurdles in 15.10.
