The speech and debate team at Leland High School won an award for best overall performance at the Catholic National Forensic League national tournament in Milwaukee. More than 550 schools competed in the tournament, which took place May 28 and 29.
The Leland team qualified for the national tournament based on its performance at a tournament in Sacramento in January.
To be recognized at the national tournament in Milwaukee, the students must do well in multiple categories: debate events, rhetorical events and literature interpretation events.
Four other schools were given the best overall performance award.
The boys and girls teams also won top honors within their Optimist District at the Optimist International Pacific Central District Oratorical Contest. The team's district includes schools from Utah, Nevada and Northern California.
Leland's Caroline Xie and Vivek Munispally each won a $1,500 scholarship at the contest.
Gay Brasher, the team's adviser, said the team practices throughout the school year and competes in a tournament nearly every weekend.
Nine students from the team qualified to compete in this week's National Forensic League tournament in next week in Philadelphia, where 940 schools will be represented.
