Schools already opening doors for families, incoming kindergartners
By Anne Gelhaus
Kindergarten enrollment doesn't begin until April in the San Jose Unified School District, but one Almaden Valley elementary school is already showing its campus to prospective families.

For the last couple of months, Simonds Elementary School Principal Linda Kakes has set aside time each week to take parents of incoming kindergartners on campus tours. Kakes says there haven't been a lot of takers so far, but she expects the numbers to grow as the district's enrollment period nears.

Kakes says she limits the tours to parents so she can take them into classrooms for each grade level.

"They're signing on for a six-year program, not just kindergarten," she adds.

Other elementary schools are waiting a while to show parents what their campuses have to offer to incoming kindergartners and their parents. Williams and Los Alamitos elementary schools are both in the process of setting tour dates.

Graystone Elementary School has set tours for March 13, 20 and 27, 9:15-10 a.m., for families that will be enrolling children in kindergarten for the 2006-07 school year.

Kindergarten enrollment begins April 3 in the San Jose Unified School District. For more information, contact the district assignment center at 408.535.6436.
