Mustangs lose one the hard way
Lacrosse team can't hold a half-time lead

One thing you learn in sports is that nothing is for certain. Pioneer's girls lacrosse team learned that lesson the hard way in a non-league game with Robert Louis Stevenson on April 24.
After leading 5-3 in the first half, Pioneer allowed six goals and only scored two in the second half to drop the game 9-7. Micaela Hayden was the dominant player for the Mustangs, scoring four of the seven goals. Sarah Brauer added two and Nancy Neal contributed a goal to the cause. Akasha Perez also had 16 saves in the loss.
Stevenson was the first opponent for Pioneer after coming back from spring break, and the loss brings its overall record to 7-5-1.
The game prior to R.L.S. on April 12 ended with no clear victor--it was a 12-12 tie in a non-league clash with Las Lomas. The Mustangs battled back after trailing 6-3 going into halftime, but Pioneer would not go quietly. Sami Vega was all over the field with four of the Mustangs' 12 and Allison Scott was right there with her with three of her own. Neal and Brauer each added two goals and Natalie Ventimiglia tossed one in.
Though officially the game ended in a tie, the two teams decided to finish the game with a 2-on-2 plus goalies. Scott and Vega both took the field with Perez between the pipes. Scott won the draw and Vega took the ball down the field and tossed in the so-called winning goal for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs were scheduled to take on Gunn on April 26 at 4 p.m. before hosting Castilleja on April 28 at 4 p.m.
The boys lacrosse team at Bellarmine College Prep defeated Menlo School 8-5 on April 19. The Bells scored three goals in the third period, which helped them break away from Menlo. Matt Weigand led the Bells with three goals in the win. Michael Frederick added a pair of goals, and Sam Boyer, Michael Roberson and Eliot Williams had one each.
Bellarmine took an early lead, finishing the first period up 3-2, and then the Bells continued to outscore Menlo with one goal in the second, three in the third and one more in the fourth.
The win brings the Bells to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in league play.
Bellarmine also downed Menlo-Atherton on April 17 in a PAL league match. The Bells came out of the contest with a 14-7 win thanks to Pat Holland, who scored six goals. Weigand also stepped up with four goals in the win, while Deven Carroll, Frederick, Brian Harley and Zac Mitchel each had one.
The Bells thought they might have a hard game after finishing the first period in a tie at four, but when the Bells repeated their four and Menlo-Atherton couldn't Bellarmine had some room to breathe and just made the gap bigger with another four spot in the fourth.
