Road Routing: Almaden Valley resident Jim Hafner's software invention that enables drivers to reduce their fuel consumption was among the 3,621 patents IBM secured during 2006, making it the nation's leader in patents secured. Hafner worked on the project with John Tomlin. They designed the software to be used with GPS systems on plug-in hybrid cars to calculate the most economical route drivers can use to get to their destinations.
