Day Trip: Park interpreter John Slenter guides a tour group through a rotary furnace at the Quicksilver Park in Almaden Valley. The furnace, built in 1939 by engineer H.W. Gould, was used as part of the area's quicksilver mining operations through 1976. Today, the area is part of the Santa Clara County Parks Department, which leads half-day van tours through the rugged mountains.
