Giants clinic

The San Jose Giants will host a Winter Baseball Clinic for boys and girls ages 9-13 on Jan. 12-13 at San Jose Municipal Stadium. Giants hitting coach Gary Davenport and Giants players Mike Mooney and Anthony Contreras will direct the clinic.

The cost for the clinic is $135 for two days or $75 for a one-day session. Fundamentals will be stressed, including base running, hitting, throwing, catching and fielding. Clinic hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and participants receive a San Jose Giants T-shirt.

Almaden softball

The Almaden Valley Girls Softball League will hold sign-ups for players ages 5-16 on Jan. 5, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., and Jan. 9, 6-9 p.m., at Graystone Elementary School. The league is not restricted by territory, so all girls of all skill levels are eligible. For more information, visit www.avgsl.org.

Umps needed

The Santa Clara Valley Federation of Umpires is looking for baseball umpires, experienced or not, to work the 2008 summer baseball season that includes Pony, Colt, Palomino, American Legion and Oldtimers games.
