E-waste event at Williams good for school and Earth

By Emilie Crofton

Almaden Valley resident Dave Staub will help Mother Earth and Williams Elementary School simultaneously.

Staub is coordinating a free electronic-waste event on behalf of the school, where his daughter attends kindergarten. Residents can drop off e-waste including televisions, computer monitors, CPUs, VCRs, DVD players, cell phones, printers, keyboards, stereos and microwaves on Jan. 26, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the school's parking lot, which is located at 1150 Rajkovich Way.

Staub, who works as solid waste superintendent for the city of Santa Clara, says he deals with waste and recyclable items on a daily basis, and it was a natural fit to help the school and get rid of e-waste at the same time.

"I'm familiar with bans on e-waste and came up with the fundraising event for the school," Staub, 37, says. "Many of these items have been banned from landfills because they contain significant levels of lead."

All collected items will be recycled at Asset Services & Liquidators, a high-tech equipment and services company based in San Jose. The company collects and recycles usable material, including manufacturing equipment.

Part of the money raised will go directly back to Williams Elementary. The school will receive 10 cents a pound for all television and computer monitors and 5 cents a pound for all CPUs collected.

"The more material dropped off, the more funds get directed to the school," Staub says.

This is the first time Williams Elementary School will hold an e-waste event.

"E-waste is a profitable industry, and now some of that money can go back into the school," Staub says.
