Two Campbell residents are arrested on drug charges
Operation took place at Los Gatos High
By Gloria Wang
Police recently made their 19th drug-related arrest stemming from a three-month undercover operation at Los Gatos High School that led to warrants for the arrest of 22 juveniles and adults. The remaining three suspects, all students, are expected to be arrested after Jan. 1, when they return to Los Gatos from being on vacation.
David Potts, 18, turned himself into the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department Dec. 21, a day after police officers removed a dozen students from class.
The juveniles were detained at juvenile hall until Dec. 26.
The arrests came as a result of an operation in which a police officer posed as a high school junior and became involved in drug activity at Los Gatos High School.
The adult suspects are expected to be arraigned on court dates between Jan. 3 and Jan. 14. At the arraignment, the suspects will be formally charged with their crimes, each with at least one count of sales and/or possession of marijuana, ecstasy, cocaine or methamphetamine.
Among those arrested were Campbell residents Luke Longberger, 18, Matthew Shearer, 21, Los Gatan Matt Weatherford, 19, and Los Gatos High School students Spencer Griscom, 18, and Andrew Werth, 18.
According to Los Gatos High School Principal Trudy McCulloch, school administrators had been especially concerned about the drug scene at the school since last year, when several situations occurred involving substance abuse. In the past calendar year, McCulloch said, three to four students were expelled for possessing or selling drugs, and at a school dance, half a dozen teenagers were caught using ecstasy.
