    Spartans to host baseball dinner

    Dave Righetti will be the guest speaker on Jan. 18, 6-9 p.m., when the San Jose State University baseball team hosts its "First Pitch Dinner" at The Three Flames Restaurant, 1547 Meridian in San Jose.

    Righetti, the former Pioneer and San Jose City College star who went on to play for the New York Yankees and other big league clubs, is currently the pitching coach for the San Francisco Giants.

    Along with the guest speaker, the night will also provide an opportunity to meet the 2002 Spartans and there will be information on the coming season, the booster club and season tickets.

    The cost of the dinner is $35 and the reservation deadline is Jan. 11. For more information, call 408.924.1467.

    Golf tournament for the Broncos

    Mark O'Brien will pull on the uniform as the new head baseball coach at Santa Clara University this spring. But before he does, he'll be meeting and greeting baseball boosters in the Santa Clara University Bronco Baseball Golf Tournament on Jan. 25 at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club in San Jose.

    The tourney features an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start and will be followed by a dinner, auction and raffle. The registration fee is $200 before Jan. 11 and $215 after Jan. 11. The fees include cart, green fees, range balls, tee prizes, lunch and dinner (cost for the dinner only is $50).

    The field in the best ball scramble tourney is limited to 144 golfers.

    Girls Softball

    West Valley PAL Girls Softball will hold signups for the 2002 season on Jan. 5 and 12, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., and Jan. 9, 6:30-9 p.m., in the cafeteria at Bagby School, corner of Leigh and Curtner in San Jose.

    The recreational league is open to girls ages 5-16. First time players must provide a birth certificate. For more information, call 408.377.1960.

    Campbell volleyball programs for teens

    The city of Campbell offers drop-in volleyball programs for teen-agers and adults in the auxiliary gym at 1 W. Campbell Ave.

    Drop-in volleyball is offered for teens ages 13-18 on Wednesdays, 7-9 p.m., and for adults on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

    The cost is $3 for teens and $4 for adults. For more information, call 408.866.2107.
