McGill hits 27 twice in Del Mar wins

Warriors even league record with victory

    By Dick Sparrer

Not many teams have been able to stop--or even slow down--Del Mar's scoring machine, Morgan McGill, this season.

And it was no different for the Pioneer Mustangs and Independence 76ers last week.

McGill poured in 27 points to lead the Dons to a rousing 61-33 win over the Mustangs in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, then matched that effort with another 27-point performance in a 73-40 win over Independence two nights later.

McGill finished with a pair of three-pointers among her nine field goals and added seven points at the free-throw line to lead the Dons to the lopsided win over the Mustangs to open the week.

Senior forward A.J. Galloway supported with 14 points in the Del Mar win and sophomore guard Ali Mollet joined her teammates in double figures with 13 points. Justine Stagi added three points and Stacie Sakauye and Namsah Kargbo hit two apiece to round out the scoring.

Del Mar outscored Pioneer in every period on the road to the victory.

It wasn't much different two days later against Independence, save a fourth quarter when the Sixers topped the Dons 19-17. But that only came after Del Mar had shut out Independence 14-0 in the third period.

Once again it was McGill leading the charge with another 27-point performance. The hot-shooting senior popped 13 free throws in this one.

Mollet came through with 19 points in the Del Mar win and Stagi drilled three three-pointers on her way to a 14-point night. Galloway added nine points and Katrina Manubay and Lisa Nwoye hit two each.

The Dons, now 4-0 in the division and 14-3 for the year, will visit Santa Teresa on Jan. 15 and host Prospect on Jan. 17 in a pair of 7 p.m. league games.

    Warriors win

A big second half sparked the Westmont girls basketball team to a rousing 43-32 win over Mount Pleasant last week in the Mount Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The Warriors fell behind 9-7 after a quarter, but outscored Mount Pleasant 13-9 in the second to take a 22-16 lead by the half. Then Westmont topped the Cards 11-5 in the third and 12-9 in the fourth to cruise to the easy win.

Senior Shannon Stenzel poured in 16 points to lead the Warriors to the big win. Jennifer Brown added eight points in the game, Rachel Gelman had six, Karly Brownridge five, Ann Baumgardner three, Rachelle Brady and Allyson Carrothers two each and Jennifer Chaney one.

The win evened Westmont's league record at 1-1 and pushed the Warriors' season mark to 9-5.

Westmont will play host to Leland on Jan. 16 and will visit Oak Grove on Jan. 18 for a pair of 7 p.m. league games.

In other local girls basketball action, Prospect dropped a 47-38 Santa Teresa Division to Piedmont Hills. The loss leveled Prospect's league mark at 2-2 and left the Panthers 11-5 for the season.

Earlier in the week, Prospect had pulled out a 57-49 win over Gunderson.

Vikes run to head of the class

The Lynbrook boys cross-country team didn't just perform well on the trails of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League this past fall... the Vikings also did pretty well in the classroom.

Well enough, in fact, that the Vikes won the Central Coast Section Fall Scholastic championship in their sport with an outstanding cumulative grade point average of 3.6458.

CCS recognizes student-athletes in all varsity sports and honors those with the highest collective GPAs.

Los Gatos and Saratoga also placed among the CCS leaders during the fall season.

The Gatos girls were fourth in field hockey with a combined 3.5350 and the LG boys tied for sixth in football with a combined 3.1650.

The Saratoga girls finished sixth in field hockey at 3.3733.
