McGill pops 51 points in two more victories

    By Dick Sparrer

It was another big week for Morgan McGill ... and because of it, it was another big week for the Del Mar girls basketball team in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

McGill poured in 51 points in two games to lead the Dons to back-to-back wins over Prospect and Santa Teresa.

The two wins helped the Dons improve to 6-0 in the division and to 16-3 for the year.

McGill buried 30 points in Del Mar's lopsided 71-33 win over Prospect last Thursday night. Three of her nine field goals were from three-point range, and she added nine points at the free-throw line.

Justine Stagi had three threes among her 11 points for the Dons. A.J. Galloway finished with eight points in the win, Stacie Sakauye hit six and Ali Mollet and Helena Oh added five apiece.

Earlier in the week, McGill had drilled 21 points to lead the Dons to a tight 44-41 win over Santa Teresa. Mollet supported with 11 points and Stagi and Galloway had six each. Stagi popped a pair of threes and McGill had one.

The Dons will try to maintain their winning ways this week when they host Gunderson on Jan. 22 and visit Piedmont Hills on Jan. 24 in a pair of 7 p.m. games.

In other local action, the Westmont girls split a pair of Mt. Hamilton decisions, losing a 67-62 heartbreaker to Oak Grove after beating Leland 48-41.

Senior guard Jennifer Brown tossed in 17 points to lead the Warriors past the Chargers. Brown had a three among her four field goals, and she added eight points at the charity line.

Freshman Rachel Gelman joined Brown in double digits with 12 points and frosh Allyson Carrothers supported with eight points. Shannon Stenzel and Karly Brownridge had four points each.

Brown came back with 23 points, but it wasn't enough for the Warriors against Oak Grove.
