Reasons to celebrate are abundant for Campbell
By Michelle C. Crowe
While the official holiday season may be over, there are several reasons to celebrate besides the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday Jan. 21, including the 50th anniversary of Campbell's incorporation as a city. As part of the celebration, the Campbell Chamber of Commerce is seeking out businesses and business owners who've been commercially active since that time for special recognition. So far, none have been located.
Additionally, the Chamber is also accepting nominations for its citizen of the year award. Candidates must be Chamber members and nominations are kept on file for five years. Contact Chamber Executive Director Betty Deal at 408.378.6252 with potential names for either honor.
Owner Dale Ann Johnson of Lisa's Tea Treasures at The Pruneyard is celebrating her five-year anniversary this month with special anniversary teas. Call 408.371.7377 for details and reservations.
New businesses keep popping up throughout Campbell. The city now boasts two Walgreens Drug Stores--the existing 24-hour facility on 1660 S. Winchester Blvd. at Hamilton Ave., and the new one at 1570 Campbell Ave. in the Kirkwood Plaza. Although doors opened Jan. 17, store manager Edwin Wright reports that the grand opening will actually be held sometime in mid-February. Store hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.
"We're much closer to opening than we were, but there are still a few mechanical things to work out," says Stoddard's Brewhouse general manager Gustavo Arambula (no relation to downtown artist Debbie Arambula, although Gustavo's own wife coincidentally bears the same name).
The two-story structure, located at 200 E. Campbell Ave. at Second Street, will boast downtown's only bird's-eye al fresco dining experience when it opens. (Does anyone else remember Sebastian's at the top of the Pruneyard tower?)
Soon Campbellites need no longer drive to Sunnyvale, nor wait for the next Downtown Campbell Business Association St. Patrick's Day Festival or Campbell Chamber of Commerce Prune Festival to sample brewmeister/owner Bob Stoddard's wares.
Stoddard has kindly supplied the liquid refreshment at these and other Campbell events well before this, which seems worthy of at least a citizen of the year nomination to me.
