Campbell is deserving of 'Heart of the Valley' title
By Michelle C. Crowe
Santa Clara County may have been known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight," but recent events indicate Campbell may deserve the title of "Biggest Heart in the Valley." By saving from destruction what some consider its insignificant denizens (read homeless cats and dogs), Campbell business owners and residents are definitely sharing the love, along with the contents of their pocketbooks.
When Companion Animal Rescue Effort held its annual feline/canine food drive at Butchie's Pet & Feed Supply (at both the Campbell and Santa Clara stores), citizens responded generously throughout the holiday season.
CARE reports that its drive was a tremendous success. During the months of November and December, it received almost 800 pounds of dry food and about 1,500 ounces of canned food, most of it of high quality, such as Science Diet, Iams and Nutro Max. CARE now has enough food to keep foster cats and dogs fat and happy for quite some time, says Cat Team Leader Jennifer Bailey.
Food Drive Coordinator Linda Kahn noted that anywhere from 50 to 90 percent of the food donated was purchased from the sponsor store, creating a well-deserved win for Butchie's Owners Susan and Joe Polito, too.
CARE fostered and adopted out 152 cats and 323 dogs in 2001--for a total of 475 animals. Anyone looking for a potential feline companion can stop by Butchie's, 4177 Hamilton Ave., to meet available cats; visit PetsMart, 850 W. Hamilton Ave., Fridays, 7-9 p.m.; or check out the CARE website for other dates and times of cat and dog adoption fairs. The rescue organization is also planning a spring rummage sale--anyone with potential items to donate can call 929.CARE.
Regardless of which position people take on issues, it would be great to see a similarly responsive involvement in the March 5 election. Karen Kane-Foempe, a volunteer with the Campbell Union School District's upcoming bond issue campaign, said volunteers are needed for the "remember to vote" campaign.
Volunteers are needed for Jan. 29 and Feb. 18, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Anyone interested should contact volunteer Sharon Bingham, 408.378.6675, or email her at sherbingham@yahoo.com.
