Talk of the Town
By Laurie Phillips
Q. Given that the presidential primaries are nearly upon us, it's an appropriate time to think about our next president. What qualities should that person have? Follow-up: Do you think any of the candidates in this election have the qualities you've mentioned?

Where do I start? Truthfulness would help, compared to the last president. Honesty. True red-white-and-blues? I'm sure they do--a couple of guys sound decent and honest. I'm sure they're trying to express the fact that they're decent and honest and ... politician[s]. It's hard to be a president and be honest.

Morals. Character. I think it's obvious there isn't any right now. Experience means nothing if you don't have character. Moral majorities? Yes. Several do, but they won't get elected. McCain sounds like a caring person. He's got the strength to make hard decisions.

Honesty, because of all the dishonest ones in the recent past. I think he needs to listen more. Honest Abes? I haven't paid that much attention. I'm waiting to see which candidates end up on the ballot. There's always a lot of mudslinging out there the media stirs up. I think reading lots of sources, instead of relying on one source, helps me decide.

There's five important ones: one's charisma, another's pragmatism. I don't remember the other three. After those five, there's no more needed. That's enough for an excellent president. Charisma appeal? I wouldn't know, but I know I'm not satisfied with all the campaigning that's going on, the way in which they advertise themselves. Ideally, I would imagine a place where we could get videos, where candidates give you 15 minutes.
