To remain in contention with the top teams in the league, a basketball team has to beat those squads in the second division.

And that's just what the Del Mar girls basketball team did last week when the Dons routed Pioneer 58-25 and Silver Creek 53-36 to remain in a tie for first place with Piedmont Hills in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The Dons and Pirates top the pack with matching 9-1 records. Santa Teresa is a couple of games off the pace at 6-3.

Del Mar will meet those third-place Saints in a key game this week. The Dons visit Independence (1-8) on Feb. 5 before hosting Santa Teresa on Feb. 7 in a pair of 7 p.m. games.

The Dons took care of business last week when they handled both Pioneer and Silver Creek in easy fashion.

Del Mar improved to 19-4 for the year and to 9-1 in league with the 58-25 win over Pioneer last week.

Justine Stagi was the hot shooter for the Dons, hitting five three-pointers among her seven field goals to finish with 19 points.

Ali Mollet supported with 18 points and Morgan McGill finished with 11, including a pair of threes.

A.J. Galloway tossed in four points for the Dons and Namsah Kargbo, Lisa Nwoye and Helena Oh had two points each.

The Dons outscored the Mustangs in every period on the road to the victory.

McGill had the big night earlier in the week when she poured in a team-high 17 points in the win over Silver Creek. McGill tossed in nine points at the free-throw line.

Mollet and Galloway each finished in double figures with 10 points apiece, and Stagi added eight points, including two threes. Stacie Sakauye had four points and Oh and Nwoye hit two each.

The Dons led by seven after a period, by 16 at intermission and by 22 after three periods before settling for the 17-point win.

    Westmont girls lose two

The Westmont girls slipped to 3-7 in the Mount Hamilton Division of the BVAL last week, losing 73-37 to Valley Christian and 49-40 to Mount Pleasant.

Senior guard Jennifer Brown fired in 16 points, including a three, but the Warriors lost by nine to the Cardinals last Friday night.

Karly Brownridge pitched in 10 points, including a three, to support Brown's effort.

Shannon Stenzel and Allyson Carrothers added four points apiece for the Warriors, and Stacey Stenzel and Shantale Higginson hit three each.

Brownridge had tossed in 14 points and Brown had nine in the loss to Valley to open the week. The two each popped three-pointers.

Carrothers and Ann Baumgardner added four points each for Westmont, Jennifer Chaney and Rachel Gelman had two apiece and Lindsey Sherman and Heather Rasmussen hit one each.

    Panthers split

The Prospect girls split a couple of games in the Santa Teresa Division, beating Pioneer 41-38 but losing 56-50 to Gunderson. The split left the Panthers even at 5-5 in the circuit.

    Warriors win in OT

Clay Tolbert and Brandon Sligh pumped in 15 points apiece to lead the Westmont boys basketball team to a 48-45 overtime win over Santa Teresa last Friday.

The Warriors jumped out to a 17-4 lead in the first period, but the Saints tied the score when they outpointed Westmont 17-6 in the fourth quarter. The Warriors topped the Saints 6-3 in the extra period, though, to clinch the win.

    Dons top Panthers

The Del Mar boys improved to 3-5 in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL after a tight 49-47 win over Prospect on Friday.

Miralem Mujkic pumped in 12 points to lead the Dons to the victory.

Roma Ngaleo poured in 16 points and Ryan Najima added 11 to lead all Prospect scorers in the loss to the Dons. Brad Bonvecchio supported with eight points. The Panthers slipped to 2-7 in the division with the loss.

The Panthers had fallen 66-58 to Leland earlier in the week, despite getting 12 points from Najima, 11 from Kevin McPeck and 10 from Bonvecchio.

Del Mar lost 48-38 to Overfelt to open play last week. Mujkic led the Dons with 12 points.

    BVAL soccer

The Prospect girls soccer team split a pair of games last week, beating Piedmont Hills 3-1 but losing 7-1 to second-place Santa Teresa.

First-half goals by Katie Gazlay and Randy Gillespie sparked the Panthers to the win over the Pirates. Gillespie and Natalie Kiyama had assists in the game, and the Panthers benefited from an "own goal" in the win.

Prospect, 7-11 for the year and 3-9 in the division, lost 7-1 to the Saints to open the week. Santa Teresa trails only Mitty in the standings in the rugged Mt. Hamilton Division.

A first-half goal by Gillespie off a Tara Rodriguez assist left the Panthers trailing just 2-1 at the half, but the Saints unloaded for five goals in the second half.

In other local action in the division, Westmont fell to 0-11-1, losing 4-0 to Presentation and 5-0 to Mitty.

In Santa Teresa Division play, Del Mar stretched its record to 2-8-2 with a 2-2 against Oak Grove after a 2-1 loss to Pioneer.

Tara Robison and Kristen Perry each had a goal and an assist to help the Dons to the 2-2 draw with the Eagles.

    McClaughry honored

Roger McClaughry, veteran wrestling coach at Del Mar, was among those selected at Central Coast Section Winter Sports Honor Coaches.

McClaughry has worked as a coach in the Campbell school district since 1971, when he took over the wrestling program at Westmont. He coached the Warriors from 1971-1989 before moving on to coach wrestling at Leigh from 1990-1999. He has coached at Del Mar since '99.

"He's an integral part of our athletic program," Del Mar Principal Lisa Udell wrote to the CCS. "He is a leader and mentor for all the young coaches, and a model of sportsmanship for our athletes."

McClaughry was recognized along with King City girls basketball coach Ken Kline and Menlo-Atherton and Sacred Heart Prep boys soccer coach Juan Camahort at the CCS Board of Managers meeting Jan. 24 in Los Gatos.
