Vasona Light Rail project moves forward in Campbell

    By Moryt Milo

Vasona Light Rail Project work has begun bringing light rail to Campbell in 2005.

Once completed, Campbell residents will catch the light rail train in three Campbell locations--Bascom Avenue, Hamilton Avenue and Orchard City Drive.

Valley Transportation Authority spokesman John Pilger said the agency is clearing out the area along the Campbell and Railway Avenue location, to store materials and equipment.

The light rail project is part of the 1996 Measure B Transportation Improvement Program, which will add 6.8 miles of rail connecting Campbell to downtown San Jose. The measure was approved by more than 74 percent of the voters, and although work on the Campbell portion of the extension is not planned until 2003, the location will be active, as needed equipment shuttles up and down the line to various parts of the extension.

The freight trains, which operate along this same section of track, will be moved to the east to make room for the light rail, VTA spokeswoman Lupe Solis said.

Pilger said engineers will have a specific window of time, and are planning to take advantage of a break in freight train traffic, enabling them to move the rails without disrupting freight service.

Since the project's completion is not anticipated until mid-2005, Pilger encourages people to log onto the VTA website for information at www.vta.org.

He also said that the VTA is working hard to minimize any inconveniences during construction, but he acknowledges there will be several years of dust and noise.

Pilger, who lives 500 feet from one of the light rail construction sites in San Jose, is experiencing these inconveniences.
