Big people in small places abound in the Campbell area

    By Michelle C. Crowe

Whether a company begins in a garage, a strip mall or an office tower, its success comes down to whether people respond to the idea and the people behind it. In Campbell, some of the most successful ones are located in some surprisingly small spaces.

For example, Altas Realty is housed in a small strip mall at 2020 S. Bascom Ave., kitty-corner from The Pruneyard. Yet broker/owner Al Silbernagel is the largest independently owned residential real estate brokerage in Northern California.

With more than 140 loyal agents, some who've even earned (not just sold) $1 million in a single year, Silbernagel is obviously doing something right. (Let's just say you won't see a bunch of overpriced listings coming out of that office). Not bad for a local boy who graduated from San Jose State University with a bachelor's degree in (what else?) real estate.

Down the street at 1550 S. Bascom Ave. (coincidentally near Altas' former office), Coldwell Banker has good news of another kind. Its regional office, Coldwell Banker Northern California, plans to hire 500 new agents throughout the Bay Area and Northern California in 2002.

"While many Bay Area employers are laying off workers this season, we decided to reverse that trend," said Coldwell Banker Northern California President and CEO Avram Goldman. "The real estate market has been gaining momentum and to continue to meet the needs of our clients, we need to recruit talented, highly skilled professionals to join our team. We're looking for people who might be considering a career change--motivated people who may feel their present industry lacks the opportunity they desire. We know there are many qualified, highly skilled individuals out there who may have considered a career in real estate but were apprehensive about making the change."

Goldman and his management team plan to recruit at least 40 qualified people each month and enlist them in a three-month comprehensive training program.

That exclusive training began when Coldwell Banker Northern California recently partnered with Campbell-based Chamberlin Real Estate Schools Inc.. at 1825 S. Winchester, to develop the Coldwell Banker Real Estate University Program.
