Gorman, Galant pin BVAL mat titles

Del Mar High School girls split, fall out of first

    By Dick Sparrer

Garreth Gorman and Jerry Galant weren't watching on Saturday when Norway's Kari Traa climbed to the top step of the victory stand to accept the first gold medal of the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City--they were too busy winning gold medals of their own.

Westmont's Gorman and Del Mar's Galant each won gold at the Blossom Valley Athletic League wrestling finals held Saturday at James Lick High School in East San Jose.

Gorman finished first at 173 pounds for the Warriors, and Galant was a champion at 217 pounds for the Dons.

Gorman's title certainly came as no surprise to Westmont coach Ron Scadina, who had predicted such a finish for the senior star way back in October, before the season ever began.

In fact, Scadina rated Gorman as a favorite to win both the BVAL and Central Coast Section titles this winter, then predicted that the senior would go on to place in the top eight at the state tournament.

Gorman, who finished second in the BVAL a year ago, outlasted Adrian Morales 10-7 in the finals to clinch the league title last weekend.

Tom Miller and Ryan Kennedy joined Gorman as Westmont placers at the league finals.

Miller, a senior, won by technical fall over his foe from San Jose Academy to clinch third at 191 pounds for the Warriors. Miller had placed sixth in the league meet as a junior.

Kennedy, a junior, ended up eighth at 154 pounds for Westmont.

Galant, meanwhile, rolled to a 10-3 win over Jeff Hester of Silver Creek in the championship match at 217 pounds. He topped a list of three Del Mar placers at the finals.

Mark Basso and David Cotter also placed for the Dons at the BVAL tourney at Lick.

Basso lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to an Overfelt wrestler to finish second at 127 pounds for the Dons.

Cotter finished up with a 4-2 win over a wrestler from Independence to clinch third place at 121 pounds for Del Mar.

Prospect's Tony Barba made it to the finals at 277 pounds before losing at the league tournament. Barba ended up second for the Panthers.

    Soccer

In other local soccer action last week, Prospect held off Westmont to nail a 3-2 win in the Mount Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Junior Katie Gazlay had a goal and an assist to lead the Prospect scoring in the win, but it would turn out to be an own goal in the first half that would prove the difference in the game.

Gazlay scored the game's first goal and assisted junior Randy Gillespie on a goal later in the half. An own goal made it 3-1 at intermission.

Stacey Tapia scored a first-half goal off a Megan Clapp assist for the Warriors, and Clapp scored off a Tapia assist in the second half to cut the lead to 3-2.

Both the Panthers and Warriors were blanked later in the week. Prospect lost 3-0 to Leland to finish the year 4-10 in the division and 8-12 for the season, and Westmont lost 4-0 to Santa Teresa to wind up 0-13-1 in the circuit.

Del Mar's girls, meanwhile, finished the year losing 1-0 to Overfelt and 2-0 to Mt. Pleasant to wind up 2-10-2 in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL.

In boys soccer, Michael Sato had a goal and an assist and Josh Herzburn and Ben Peterson each scored goals to lead Westmont to a 3-2 win over Lincoln in the West Valley Division of the BVAL.

But the Warriors dropped a 7-3 nod to San Jose Academy on the final day of the season to wind up 8-5-1 in the division.

David Benevides knocked in two goals for Westmont against San Jose and Matt Schombri added one.

Prospect ended up the year losing 5-0 to Leigh and 5-0 to Pioneer in the final two games of the season in the Mt. Hamilton Division.

    Basketball

Morgan McGill poured in 47 points in two games last week, but the Del Mar girls basketball team finished with a split. And the one loss dropped the Dons out of a first-place tie in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Del Mar heads into the final week of the regular season needing a couple of wins and a Piedmont Hills loss to get back into a first-place tie in the division. The Dons will visit Prospect on Feb. 12 and Gunderson on Feb. 14 for a pair of 7 p.m. games to close out the regular season.

McGill tossed in 26 points to lead the Dons to a rousing 64-26 over Independence to open the week. The senior had a couple of three-pointers among her seven field goals and she added 10 points at the free-throw line.

Sophomore Ali Mollet cashed in for 20 points in the Del Mar win. Justine Stagi and Stacie Sakauye added six points apiece, A.J. Galloway hit four and Lisa Nwoye had two.

McGill came back with 21 points later in the week, but the Dons lost an early lead to drop a tough 42-39 nod to Santa Teresa. McGill hit a three-pointer.

Mollet and Stagi added nine points each and Galloway and Nwoye had one apiece. Stagi hit a three for the Dons.

Del Mar is 10-2 in the division and 20-5 for the year heading into the final week of the regular season.
