Westmont students earn FFA awards
Westmont High School graduates Scott Garcia and Janee Thill have received American Future Farmers of America degrees at the 74th National FFA Convention in Louisville, Ky.
Of the 457,278 FFA national members, only 2,408 members earned the degree in 2001.Westmont High School senior Agata Piwarski said, "For two of our chapter members to achieve this level is very exciting. It's very rare for that to happen."
The degree recognizes outstanding leadership ability and achievements in agricultural business programs. FFA is a national youth organization that prepares students for careers in agriculture, with local chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Cinequest features area filmmakers
The Cinequest Film Festival, to be held in San Jose from Feb. 21 to March 3, will feature shorts--movies less than a half-hour long--by Campbell residents Jason Schachat and Shawn Flanagan.
Schachat's short, Golf Course High Kick of Death, has scenes from the newly redesigned Campbell Park on Gilman Avenue. Schachat plans to transfer from De Anza Community College in Cupertino to Los Angeles to pursue a master's degree in film production.
For Flanagan, this is the second time he has had an entry in the film festival. Last year he had a feature film, Friggin' Mafia Movie. This year, his short, Cop Zone, made the list.
Flanagan, 40, said, "I originally set out to make a feature but didn't have the funds. So I turned it into a short on a budget of $150."
Flanagan said he doesn't usually talk about the financial issues involved in making a movie, but he wanted other filmmakers to know that with the advances in digital technology, making a film can be done on a shoestring.
