    Oars in the Water

    The members of the Los Gatos Rowing Club have dipped their oars into the water as they prepare to open the 2002 season.

    The club, 115 rowers strong, will open the season with a regatta for first-year novice competitors on March 2 at Lake Merced in San Francisco. The varsity will be in the water on March 3 for the Serra Invitational.

    Los Gatos will host home regattas on March 9 and 17 at Lexington Reservoir.

    PAL Baseball

    The San Jose Police Activities League is currently holding sign-ups for Pony Baseball at PAL Stadium. There are openings in all divisions: Shetland (ages 5-6), Pinto (7-8), Mustang (9-10), Bronco (11-12) and Pony (13-14).

    The season begins March 23 for all divisions except Pony. Pony League play starts April 3.

    South Bay Soccer

    The South Bay Youth Soccer League is now accepting sign-ups for the spring season for boys and girls in the under-6 through under-14 age divisions (ages determined as of July 31, 2002).

    The season runs March 9 through June 1, and there will be tournaments at the end of the regular season. Players play at least half of every game.

    The registration fee of $65 per player includes a uniform, photo package and end-of-the-season award. Family discounts are available. After Feb. 28, there will be a $10 late registration fee charged and the family discount will not be offered.

    Asthma Athletic Scholarships

    The annual "Will to Win" Asthma Athlete Scholarships will return this year, offering $100,000 in scholarships to 11 high school seniors "who have excelled in athletics in spite of the challenge of asthma."

    Information on the national scholarship program is available at www.thewilltowin.org or by phone at 800.558.7305. The deadline for entries is April 30, 2002, and winners will be notified by June 2002.

    Campbell Volleyball

    The city of Campbell offers drop-in volleyball programs for teen-agers and adults in the auxiliary gym at 1 W. Campbell Ave.

    Drop-in volleyball is offered for teens ages 13-18 on Wednesdays, 7-9 p.m., and for adults on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

    The cost is $3 for teens and $4 for adults. For more information, call 408.866.2107.
