    Developer breaks ground on condos

Construction is set to begin soon on a 93-unit condominium complex on Southwest Expressway at Stokes Street.

The condos will be located near the future site of the planned Bascom Light Rail station, which is scheduled for completion in 2004.

Carrie Hazard, a marketing coordinator with Signature Properties, the company building the condominiums, said quite a few people have already called to inquire about purchasing the units.

The company will most likely start selling the condominiums in May, at prices estimated in the $400,000 range, Hazard said.

Ranging between 1,200 and 1,600 square feet, the attached units will be from two to four stories high, with underground parking.

The condos are being built on 3.95 acres of land and are scheduled for completion some time in 2002.

Signature Properties has obtained the permits needed and construction workers are currently grading the plot.

    Fact-finding next in teacher talks

A mediator ordered the Campbell Union High School District and the teacher's union to move on to fact-finding after another unproductive closed-session board meeting on Feb. 26.

The district held the meeting to discuss the contract negotiations between the district and the teacher's union, but no action was taken. The district isn't budging on its offer of 10 percent raises for teachers, although the union has lowered their request of 16.3 percent to 15.5. Now that the groups will enter into fact-finding, a three-person panel will be formed in an effort to reach a solution.

One of the representatives will be chosen by the union, one by the district and the last neutral representative will be chosen from a pool of names provided by the Public Employees Relations Board, a state organization.

The panel will then hold hearings to listen to each side's arguments and then make a recommendation based upon its findings. The recommendation is not binding, and union members have said that, if they find the recommendation unacceptable, teachers will go on strike.
