Galant wins two in Stockton contest

Del Mar sophomore Jerry Galant didn't place at the state wrestling tournament held last weekend at the University of the Pacific in Stockton. But for a sophomore, Galant did all right.

The Del Mar star won two of three matches at 217 pounds in the first day of the competition to advance to the second day of the tournament--and that's quite an accomplishment for any wrestler, let alone a sophomore in one of the higher weight classes.

Galant opened with a 4-0 win over John Orille of Galileo, but lost a tough 4-2 decision to Ken Pamanian of Downey. He came back with a thrilling 2-1 win over Eric Sandie of De La Salle, though, to move to the second day of the competition.

Galant lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to Darren Murphy of Vacaville to face elimination.

    Panthers nail win over Washington

Chad Holan hammered down 11 kills to lead the Prospect boys volleyball team to a 15-10, 10-15, 15-4, 15-11 nonleague win over Washington of Fremont last week.

It marked the first match of the 2001 season for the Panthers.
