Local citizens help Habitat
City approves bike racks, benches
By Sarah Gaffney
At a time when affording a home in this valley is about as easy as landing on Mars, it's nice to see projects like Silicon Valley's Habitat for Humanity that make home ownership possible for people who don't have stock options.
Partnering with the city of Campbell, Habitat for Humanity broke ground last year on the construction of two homes on Grant Street, a couple of blocks from downtown. Thanks to the hardworking help of local businesses and citizens, the two homes will be completed in time for a public ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 25.
Besides its well-known parking problem, downtown Campbell has long lacked places for peds and peddlers to park and stay awhile. The problem will soon be solved. The city just approved bids for public benches and bike racks to be installed along the main drag. Really, what's a downtown without a place to lock up the bike and sit and people-watch? The approvals come just in time for prime people-watching events like the upcoming Prune Festival.
Downtown's pending St. Patrick's Day party promises to be a festive shindig. The city will close Campbell Avenue at 4 p.m. so that the party's two bands can set up to play some jigs and rock and roll. Stoddard's is brewing the beer, but party organizers are still in need of volunteers to staff the beer booth and help with cleanup. To volunteer, call Marsha at Mio Vicino at 408.378.0335.
The day after St. Pat's, the Campbell Chamber of Commerce will be honoring its annual Citizen of the Year, history preservationist Joanna Herz, at a formal dinner at Orchard City Hall. Tickets are still available for the Saturday night event, catered by Panetta's, the newest caterer in town. To make reservations, call the Chamber at 408.378.6252.
Honest to goodness, the nature of this column is to promote the business of Campbell. Surprisingly, I haven't heard a peep from anyone wanting to see their business name in boldface. Fax me a blurb about your business and I'll mention you in an upcoming column. Free PR? You'd better believe it!
