    Speak Out

Money talks louder than residents' voices

It's outrageous for councilmember Dan Furtado to insist that city staff heeded neighborhood input on the San Tomas/Burrows Road project. Jerry Baum ["Residents unhappy with council action," SpeakOut, March 22] is right: the council has completely ignored the wishes of the residents most affected, those who actually live on San Tomas Aquino and Burrows roads, who have repeatedly voiced their opposition to the project.

Over the years, the council, under the influence of city bureaucrats, has worn down the residents to the point that only Judy DeBernardi still seems to believe that democracy might prevail. But Baum is wrong in thinking that voting one slate of petty politicians out of the city council in favor of another is going to change anything. The nonelected city bureaucrats and the contractors, who stand to benefit from the project, will still be there where the money is--$2 million worth, according to Furtado's own estimate--and that is a whole lot more influential than any of our votes or opinions.
