Viau hammers homers for Del Mar
By Dick Sparrer
Kyle Viau gave it his best Mark Mc-Gwire impression last week.
The Del Mar third baseman was flexing his muscles for the Dons in league and tournament play.
Viau pounded a pair of homers last week, one in a 4-1 league loss to Valley Christian and the second in a 12-0 win over Gilroy in the Pioneer Classic.
Viau's three-run blast on Saturday sparked an 11-run first inning rally that helped lift the Dons to the lopsided tournament win.
Nick Mitchell doubled and singled twice to knock in a pair of runs for Del Mar. Eric DeVincenzi doubled in a couple of runs in the first, and Danny Oswald had a pair of hits to drive in two runs.
Danny Bosakowski had two hits for Del Mar, and Greg Leon and David Sanfilippo each ripped doubles.
Richard Watkins was the winning pitcher for the Dons. It was his first decision of the year.
Things hadn't gone quite as well for the Dons earlier in the week. Del Mar lost 4-1 to Valley and 6-1 to Leland in league play, and lost to Bellarmine in their first game of the Pioneer tourney.
Viau belted a solo homer in the seventh, and Sanfilippo doubled, but Del Mar lost to Valley Christian on Monday.
The Dons, 6-9 for the year and 3-4 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, lost to Leland on Wednesday. Mitchell and Rocky Roberto each doubled for Del Mar in the loss.
Del Mar will continue play in the Pioneer Classic this week.
Westmont, meanwhile, lost its only league game last week, falling 3-2 to Oak Grove. The Warriors slipped to 3-3 in the Mt. Hamilton Division and to 6-5 for the year.
Mike Cifelli singled and doubled, and Kyle Collins slapped a double to account for half of Westmont's six hits in the loss.
Prospect split a couple of games in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL, losing 7-0 to Leigh before pounding Mt. Pleasant 12-2.
Casey Macartney had three hits to drive in three runs, and Darrell Jacks singled and tripled to knock home four in Prospect's 12-2 win over the Cardinals.
Brett Bonvechio had a couple of hits to drive in two runs, and Curtis Wills had three hits.
Jason Hesenflow added two hits, and also tossed four strong innings to claim the mound win. Hesenflow, 2-1, gave up just two hits and struck out 10.
