Junior League's efforts brought joy to seniors
I am writing to express my sincere thanks to the members of the Junior League of San Jose who participated in the annual Done in a Day project for the homebound and mobility limited seniors in our community. On Feb. 27, in a miraculous break from the rain, the volunteers, led by Maryam Azizi of Saratoga, met at Live Oak Senior Nutrition and Service Center armed with smiles, flowering plants, yard tools and beautifully filled baskets of food to share.
For most of the morning, they trimmed shrubs, dug in the dirt, planted or repotted flowers, and spent time with seniors ranging in age from 72 to over 90. As one of the recipients wrote, "Every time I go in or out my front door I am reminded of the two young women who worked so hard preparing the ground and planting impatiens in my entry strip....I carefully water them--the plants are doing well."
For the many seniors who take part in the daily fun at the Nutrition Center, the Junior League has donated a beautiful 5-foot teak bench from Smith and Hawken. Now they can sit and chat before and after lunch or while they wait for a ride home.
We all take many things for granted on a daily basis. Community involvement takes many forms, from hands-on activities, to monetary support, to board of director duties, to just being there for family, friends and neighbors. We are thankful for the volunteers of the Junior League and for all community volunteers, without whom we would not be able to serve the Los Gatos seniors and keep our community strong.
