Campbell faces the voters after controversial vote
Whether constituents agree with Congressman Tom Campbell's recent high-profile controversial votes or not, nobody can say he's afraid to own up to them. Just last week, as he did following his controversial impeachment vote, Campbell held a town hall meeting in Los Gatos--this time to field questions about his opposition to NATO airstrikes in Kosovo.
He presented two reasons for his disapproval. First off, Campbell said, the president should have received permission from Congress before ordering air strikes. Because he did not, Campbell plans to introduce a resolution onto the House floor that would require the president to seek this permission in the future.
Secondly, Campbell argued that attacking countries that pose no threat to America is only justified if they are invading another sovereign nation. Attacking a country involved in civil war, he said, is simply unjustified. And the genocide argument?
"It's my conclusion that the situation is not genocide but a bloody civil war," he said.

Local e-commerce site offers free computers to drum up business
In an attempt to boost sales and increase public recognition, the Campbell-based Internet auction company NuAuction, a self-described "E-Bay" competitor, announced plans March 31 to shell out 12,000 free computers to people who register at their website.
Unlike Free-PC.com, which made a similar offer a few months ago, NuAuction will not require extensive personal information that can be used by marketers.
"We are not asking for anything, there are no strings attached," said NuAuction president Ken Kapur. "We don't need the marketing information because the trading is done between people. We don't need advertising, we just need the people."
To be eligible for one of the 12,000 PCs--which come with Windows 98, 32-MB ram, built-in CD-ROM, hard drive and internal 56K fax/modem--people need only go to NuAuction's website and register. For every 3,000 people who register, one person will be awarded a computer.
