Cassie Gilford and Randi Gillespie were tough to hit, and Annie Kallbrier and Stephanie Nichols were tough to get out.
And when all those factors came together last week, the Prospect girls softball team rolled to back-to-back wins in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League (BVAL).
Gilford tossed a six-hitter in Prospect's 8-1 win over Del Mar, and Gillespie flipped a three-hit shutout to lead the club to a 3-0 win over Branham. Gilford pushed her pitching record to 4-2 with the win and Gillespie is now 3-1.
Kallbrier singled and doubled to drive in two runs to lead the Panthers to the win over the Dons, and Nichols had three hits in Prospect's victory over the Bruins. The Panthers are now 5-1 in the division and 7-4 for the year.
Gilford was touched for a run in the first, but then blanked Del Mar the rest of the way on the road to the win over the Dons last week.
Gillespie singled and doubled in the game and Nichols had two hits.
Nichols came back with three hits and Gilford doubled in the win over Branham later in the week. The Panthers scored a run in the first and two in the second, and that's all Gillespie needed as she scattered three hits on her way to blanking the Bruins.
Warriors win
Reed Dickert and his Westmont teammates stopped the streaking Prospect Panthers with a tight 5-4 non-league win last Monday.
Dickert and the Warriors held the powerful Prospect hitters to just seven hits in recording the win. Dickert pushed his mound record to 2-3 with the win and the Warriors to 6-7-1 for the year.
Mike Gorski and Mike Haynes each singled and doubled to lead an eight-hit attack for Westmont in the game. Haynes drove in three runs for the Warriors and Josh Herzbrun chipped in with a double.
Ted Piggins doubled twice and J.D. Mazzuca singled and doubled to lead the offensive attack for the Panthers. Kevin McPeck ripped a triple and Aaron Jacks and Brent Maselli each doubled to round out the seven hits for Prospect.
Westmont took an early lead with two runs in the first. Prospect scored in the third, but the Warriors responded with two in the home half of the frame to go up 4-1.
The Panthers picked up single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to tie it 4-4, but Westmont broke the tie with a run in the seventh to win it.
The Warriors got back to play in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL this week when they hosted Willow Glen on April 9, 3:30 p.m.; the Warriors play Leigh on April 11, 3:30 p.m.
Panthers top Dons
It was a split last week for the Panthers. After losing to Westmont on Monday, Prospect came back with a 9-1 win over Del Mar in league play.
The Panthers, 8-5 for the year, improved to 7-1 in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL and now lead the pack.
Steve Vidal tossed a seven-hitter for the win over the Dons, pushing his season record to 5-1 for the Panthers.
It was a first inning grand slam by Jacks that started Prospect on the road to the victory.
Matt Barrera slapped a solo homer in the sixth for the Dons.
Del Mar split a couple of games last week in the Valley Christian Crown Classic tournament. The Dons lost 8-3 to host Valley, but came back Saturday to beat Santa Clara 9-5 in the seventh-place game.
Seth Williams slugged a three-run homer in the first to give Del Mar an early lead against Valley last week. But the Warriors came back with four in the third and three in the fourth to cruise to the win.
Nick Vega cracked a double for the Dons.
Williams homered and doubled to drive in four runs and he was also the winning pitcher when Del Mar beat Santa Clara on Saturday.
Greg Myers also homered for the Dons and Vega ripped a double.
