Tree City USA
The Department of Forestry presented the Campbell City Council with an award for being named "Tree City USA" for the 20th consecutive year on April 2.
In order to achieve this distinction, presenter Capt. Don Kendall from the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said four requirements needed to be met. The city must establish a tree board; it must have a tree city ordinance; it must create a tree budget and it must celebrate Arbor Day.
"One of the most difficult requirements is establishing a tree budget," Kendall said. "This is often hard for many cities to do."
Campbell has continually met all the requirements for the past two decades, which the department said was laudable.
SV Marathon
The Campbell City Council approved the running of the 2002 Silicon Valley Marathon course through Campbell on Oct. 27.
The event, which has been held annually since 1997, would permit runners to enter Campbell on the Los Gatos Creek Trail and make their way south into Los Gatos. The course would loop through Los Gatos and Saratoga before runners re-entered Campbell on Bucknall Avenue.
The majority of the runners are expected to finish the Campbell section of the course by noon.
Steinbeck Lecture
The Campbell Public Library is celebrating the 100th anniversary of John Steinbeck's birth, with a talk and slide presentation by local author Audry Lynch, in the Campbell Community Room on April 23 at 7 p.m.

Local Carnival
The Moreland Educational Foundation is sponsoring a community carnival at Prospect High School, 18900 Prospect Road, April 11-14.
The weekend event will include rides, games, food and musical entertainment. Tickets can be purchased in advance.

SV Open Studios
Four local Campbell artists will be participating in Silicon Valley Open Studios 2002. A free tour guide will be available at the Kensington Art Centre, 347 E. Campbell Ave., April 20-21.
Jo Cooley, Darren Croke, Judy Heintz and Frank Laufer will offer the public a glimpse into their world as artists. It is an opportunity to introduce children to a visual experience and meet artists who live and work in the Campbell community.
